Staying connected in Larnaca: the local guide

เบอร์ฉุกเฉิน

  • 112 - single European emergency number
  • 199 - also routes to emergency services in Cyprus

เขตเวลา

EET (UTC+2), EEST (UTC+3) in summer - Cyprus keeps daylight saving

สภาพอากาศ

Hot, dry and reliable: summers 32-37C with essentially no rain from May to September, mild winters 15-18C with what little rain there is falling between December and February. One of the longest seasons in Europe

Larnaca runs on Cyta, Epic and PrimeTel, and your eSIM rides one of them as its host. The Republic of Cyprus is well covered - dense 4G along the coast and through the towns, with widespread 5G. Larnaca, Finikoudes, the airport and the resort strip are all comfortable. What makes Cyprus genuinely unusual for a connectivity guide is that it is one of the only places on earth where you can walk across a line in a city street and leave the EU roaming zone.

Cyprus is divided, and your phone changes country when you cross

The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member, so Roam Like at Home applies: an EU or EEA SIM roams on its domestic allowance with no surcharge.

Northern Cyprus is not. The island has been divided since 1974, and the northern third is administered separately and recognised only by Türkiye. It uses Turkish mobile networks, and those sit outside the EU roaming zone entirely.

The consequences are specific and catch people every season:

  • Cross the Green Line and your phone switches to a Turkish network at non-EU roaming rates. Crossing points are open - Ledra Street in Nicosia is a pedestrian crossing in the middle of the capital, and there are vehicle crossings elsewhere. Take your passport.
  • You do not have to cross to be caught. Near the buffer zone, and along parts of the coast, a handset can latch onto a northern network without you moving at all. This is the version that produces surprise bills.
  • The currencies differ too - euro in the south, Turkish lira in the north.

Practically: if you plan to cross, know what your operator charges for Türkiye, or turn data roaming off for the day. If you are staying near the line, consider selecting your network manually.

Drive on the left

The other legacy of British rule, and the one most likely to have physical consequences.

Cyprus drives on the left. Hire cars are right-hand drive, and visitors from mainland Europe consistently underestimate how much adjustment this takes - particularly at roundabouts and when pulling out of a hotel car park on the first morning.

Road signs are in Greek and English, distances in kilometres, and the motorways are good. It is an easy island to drive and a very easy one to get the first junction wrong on.

Where the signal gets weird

The Zenobia. Larnaca's most famous attraction is underwater - a roll-on/roll-off ferry that sank in 1980 just outside the harbour and is routinely ranked among the best wreck dives in the world. It sits between about 16 and 42 metres, and obviously has no coverage at all. Worth noting for the same reason as Roatan: do not dive immediately before flying, and Larnaca airport is ten minutes from the dive shops, which makes the temptation real.

The Troodos mountains, an hour or so inland, where coverage follows the villages and the roads and thins on the trails. Troodos gets snow in winter and there is a small ski area.

The Akamas peninsula in the far west, which is deliberately undeveloped and patchy.

The buffer zone, per above - not so much weak signal as the wrong signal.

The salt lake just outside town is open and covered; the flamingos there in winter are the local sight.

The apps that need data here

  • A car hire and maps app. Cyprus effectively requires a car to see properly - public transport between towns exists but is limited and slow.
  • Bolt operates in Cyprus, alongside regulated taxis, and covers Larnaca and the main towns.
  • A translation app is largely unnecessary. Greek is the language, and English is very widely spoken - a legacy of British administration until 1960 and of the large British expatriate and military presence since.
  • A weather app mostly for wind, if you are diving.
  • Ferry and excursion bookings, in season.

Arriving

Larnaca International (LCA) is the island's main gateway and sits about 5 km from the town centre - one of the shortest airport transfers anywhere, and a large part of why Larnaca has grown as a base.

Paphos (PFO) is the other airport, about 90 minutes west.

The bus from Larnaca airport into town and onward to Nicosia and Limassol is cheap and straightforward. Car hire is at the terminal, and note the left-hand driving before you pull out.

Cyprus uses the euro in the south. Cards are widely accepted; carry some cash for village tavernas.

How much data do you need in Larnaca?

Modest. This is a beach-and-drive holiday for most visitors, with wifi at the accommodation.

For a week, 1GB per 3 days is comfortable. If you intend to cross to the north, budget for that separately - it is not covered by an EU allowance and may not be covered by a Cyprus-only eSIM plan either. Plans top up from your dashboard.

What to wear

Summer here is genuinely hot and very dry - the mid-thirties for months, with essentially no rain between May and September. Light clothing, a hat, and real sun protection.

Water shoes. Many Cypriot beaches shelve over rock and pebble rather than sand.

Something modest for the churches and the mosque. Hala Sultan Tekke, on the salt lake, is one of the most significant Islamic sites in the region and is an active place of worship - shoulders and knees covered, shoes off.

A light layer for winter evenings, which are mild rather than warm.

Walking shoes for Troodos, which is a different climate entirely and can be cold and snowy while the coast is pleasant.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

Hala Sultan Tekke across the salt lake, with flamingos, between roughly November and March - the shot that is unmistakably Larnaca.

Finikoudes promenade at golden hour, palms and fishing boats along the seafront.

The Church of Saint Lazarus, ninth-century, built over the tomb of the Lazarus of the gospel, who tradition holds settled and died in Larnaca.

The Zenobia, if you dive - one of the most photographed wrecks in the world.

Cape Greco, an hour east, with sea caves and clear water.

Lefkara, a mountain village known for lace, where Leonardo da Vinci is said to have bought an altar cloth.

Fun facts

Larnaca is built over ancient Kition, a Phoenician city-state, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on the island.

Saint Lazarus is said to have come to Cyprus after his resurrection and served as bishop here for thirty years; the church holds what tradition identifies as his tomb.

Hala Sultan Tekke marks the burial place of Umm Haram, a relative of the Prophet Muhammad, and is a rare thing in the region: an important Islamic shrine maintained in the Greek Cypriot south.

The flamingos arrive at the salt lake each winter in the thousands, feeding on brine shrimp, and leave when it dries in summer.

And Cyprus has been divided since 1974, with a UN buffer zone running the width of the island and directly through Nicosia - the last divided capital in Europe.

Big events

Kataklysmos, the Festival of the Flood, is Larnaca's own - fifty days after Orthodox Easter, celebrated most enthusiastically here, with water-throwing, music and stalls along the seafront for several days.

Orthodox Easter, the most important religious festival of the year, when the island largely closes and then feasts.

Summer, June to September, is peak, hot and busy; May, June, September and October are the best months, with warm sea and manageable heat.

Winter is mild, quiet and cheap, and is when the flamingos are on the lake.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The love: Larnaca is easy. The airport is minutes from the beach, the sea is warm well into autumn, the food is excellent and generous, English is spoken everywhere, and the island is small enough that mountains, wine villages, ancient sites and empty beaches are all within a couple of hours. The Zenobia gives it a world-class attraction that most beach towns simply do not have.

The complaints are fair. Larnaca itself is not the prettiest Cypriot town - the seafront is pleasant and the rest is workaday, and visitors expecting a picturesque old town are underwhelmed. The beaches are grey-sand and modest compared with Ayia Napa or the west. It is hot to the point of limiting in July and August. You really need a car, and the driving side catches people out. And the island's division is a live political reality rather than a historical curiosity, which visitors sometimes encounter without context.

Use Larnaca as a base rather than a destination, hire a car, dive the Zenobia, and come in May or October.

FAQ: Larnaca connectivity

Does EU roaming work in Cyprus?

In the Republic of Cyprus - the south, including Larnaca - yes, it is an EU member and Roam Like at Home applies. Northern Cyprus does not: it uses Turkish mobile networks and sits outside the EU roaming zone entirely.

What happens to my phone if I cross the Green Line?

It switches to a Turkish network and bills at non-EU roaming rates. Crossing points are open and you need your passport. You can also be caught without crossing - near the buffer zone a handset may latch onto a northern network on its own, which is where surprise charges usually come from. Selecting your network manually avoids it.

Do they drive on the left in Cyprus?

Yes - a legacy of British rule, and hire cars are right-hand drive. Signs are in Greek and English and the roads are good, but give yourself a careful first hour, especially at roundabouts.

Can I dive the Zenobia and fly the same day?

You should not. Standard guidance is a minimum of 18 hours after multi-day or repetitive diving and at least 12 after a single dive, with many operators advising 24. Larnaca airport is about ten minutes from the dive centres, which makes this an easy mistake to make - plan the last dive a clear day before your flight.
