Običajni klici in SMS še naprej delujejo na vaši običajni številki prek vašega domačega operaterja, dokler imate to kartico SIM aktivno.
Zemljevidi in sporočila porabijo malo; video, video klici in deljenje povezave porabijo največ.
Kdaj naj namestim svoj Črna gora eSIM?

CET (UTC+1), CEST (UTC+2) in summer - Montenegro keeps daylight saving

Vreme

One of the hottest places in Europe in summer: the basin regularly passes 38-40C in July and August, with mild wet winters (5-10C) and serious rainfall between November and February

Podgorica runs on Crnogorski Telekom, One and m:tel, and your eSIM rides one of them as its host. The capital sits in a wide flat basin and is easily the best-covered place in the country - dense 4G, 5G in the urban core, and none of the terrain problems that complicate the coast and the mountains. If Podgorica is where your Montenegro trip starts, it is also where your data will behave best.

Podgorica is where you arrive, leave and change - plan for that

Very few people come to Montenegro for Podgorica. They come through it. It has the country's main airport, its rail junction, and the roads to everywhere else, and it is the place where onward plans get made.

That makes the connectivity question here less about the city than about the journeys that begin in it - and one of those is genuinely extraordinary.

The Belgrade-Bar railway: eleven hours mostly out of signal

The line that runs through Podgorica is one of the great railway journeys in Europe, and its engineering is exactly why your phone will struggle on it.

The route covers roughly 476 km between Belgrade and Bar, of which about 175 km is in Montenegro. It passes through 254 tunnels - some 114 km of tunnel in total - and over 435 bridges and viaducts. It climbs to around 1,032 m near Kolašin and crosses the Mala Rijeka viaduct, 500 m long and 200 m above the river, which was the highest railway bridge in the world when it was built.

A quarter of the line is inside a mountain. On a ten- to eleven-hour ride you will be out of signal for long stretches, in bursts, without warning.

What follows is practical:

  • Download everything before you board - tickets, maps, your accommodation address at the other end, and something to read or watch.
  • Do not plan to work on this train. People try. It does not go well.
  • The scenery is the point. The stretch through the Montenegrin mountains and down past Skadar Lake to the coast is the reason to take a slow train instead of a two-hour bus, and looking out of the window is a better use of it than hunting for bars.

Note also that the line crosses an international border, so your roaming zone changes partway - see below.

The roaming position, briefly

Montenegro uses the euro but is not in the EU, so Roam Like at Home does not apply and an EU or UK SIM bills out of zone. The currency does a very effective job of hiding this from visitors.

If you are on the Belgrade train you cross between Serbia and Montenegro, both outside the EU zone, so nothing improves at the border - it simply changes which out-of-zone network you are on.

Where the signal gets weird

On the railway, as above - the dominant fact.

Ostrog Monastery, about an hour north, is built into a vertical cliff face. The approach road switchbacks up the mountain with intermittent coverage, and inside the rock-cut chapels there is nothing.

Skadar Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans and half in Albania, is flat and open - coverage is decent around Virpazar and thins on the water and in the reed channels.

The canyons. Montenegro's interior is carved by the Morača and Tara canyons, and the roads run at the bottom of them. The Tara is the deepest canyon in Europe. Signal follows the ridgelines, not the road.

Podgorica itself is the easy part - flat, low-rise and well covered.

The apps that need data here

  • Offline maps of the interior, before you drive north. This is the single most useful preparation for a Montenegro trip.
  • Ride-hailing is thin. Uber and Bolt are not established here; taxis are cheap, local companies are called by phone or hailed, and hotels will book for you. Agree the fare.
  • Bus timetables. Montenegro runs on buses far more than trains, they are frequent and cheap, and the schedules live online rather than on any station board.
  • A weather app in summer, because 40C in the Podgorica basin is a genuine planning constraint rather than a talking point.

Arriving

Podgorica Airport (TGD) is about 11 km south of the city, small and quick. It is the country's main gateway alongside Tivat, which is closer to the coastal resorts.

From here the whole country is close: Kotor is around 1.5 hours, Budva about an hour, Kolašin and the northern mountains an hour and a half, and the Albanian border is 30 minutes away.

The euro is the currency, which makes arithmetic easy. Cards work in Podgorica; carry cash for the north and for small places.

How much data do you need in Podgorica?

Light in the city, front-loaded for everything else. Podgorica itself asks very little of your phone. The trips out of it ask you to prepare in advance.

For a week using Podgorica as a base, 1GB per 3 days is a fair baseline, plus headroom for pre-downloading maps of the mountains and the canyons. Plans top up from your dashboard.

What to wear

Summer here is severe. Podgorica sits in a basin ringed by mountains that traps heat, and 38-40C is an ordinary July afternoon - it is regularly among the hottest cities in Europe. Light clothing, a hat, water, and the local habit of doing nothing much between one and five.

Winter is mild but genuinely wet - Montenegro's rainfall is among the highest in Europe and it arrives in volume. A real waterproof.

If you are heading north to Durmitor or Kolašin, pack as if for a different country: it snows there, and the temperature difference between the capital and the mountains is dramatic in both directions.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

Podgorica is not a photogenic city and it is honest to say so - it was bombed close to flat in the Second World War and rebuilt as socialist Titograd, so almost nothing old survives.

What there is:

The Millennium Bridge over the Morača, the city's modern landmark, best lit after dark.

The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, a striking modern Orthodox cathedral finished in 2013.

Stara Varoš, the small surviving Ottoman quarter with the clock tower - the fragment of the old city that the bombs missed.

But the real photographs are outside the city:

Ostrog Monastery, white against a vertical grey cliff, an hour north - one of the most extraordinary buildings in the Balkans and a major pilgrimage site.

Skadar Lake from the Pavlova Strana viewpoint, where the river loops back on itself in a near-perfect horseshoe.

The Mala Rijeka viaduct from the road below, 200 m of concrete legs holding a railway in the sky.

Fun facts

Podgorica was Titograd from 1946 to 1992, renamed for Tito and rebuilt from near-total destruction - Allied bombing hit the city dozens of times in 1944.

The city sits at the confluence of five rivers, which is why it is where it is despite having no defensible hill.

Skadar Lake is the largest lake in southern Europe and one of the continent's most important bird reserves, with Dalmatian pelicans among its residents.

And Montenegro adopted the euro unilaterally in 2002 without joining the eurozone or the EU - it simply started using it, and still does.

Big events

Summer heat is the calendar item that matters: July and August in the basin are punishing, and the country's population effectively relocates to the coast.

Podgorica Cultural Summer fills the warmer evenings with open-air performance.

Ostrog pilgrimage draws very large numbers around major Orthodox feast days, particularly in spring.

Winter brings skiing at Kolašin and Žabljak, both within a couple of hours and both inexpensive by Alpine standards.

Why people love it - and why some don't

Let us be straight: most visitors do not love Podgorica, and it does not especially ask them to. It is a working administrative capital of around 180,000 people, rebuilt in concrete after the war, with a handful of sights and a pleasant riverside.

What it is good at is being a base. Cheap accommodation, good local restaurants at genuinely local prices rather than coastal ones, an easy airport, and everything in Montenegro within two hours - the coast, the canyons, the mountains, Ostrog, Skadar Lake and Albania.

The complaints are the obvious ones: little to see, brutal summer heat, and an architectural character that the guidebooks struggle to praise. The city's café culture is genuinely good and the surrounding country is spectacular, which is the trade.

Stay a night, use it as a hub, and spend your time on what is around it.

FAQ: Podgorica connectivity

Will I have signal on the Belgrade-Bar train?

Intermittently at best. The line runs through 254 tunnels - about 114 km of the 476 km route is inside a mountain - so you lose signal in long unpredictable bursts across a ten- to eleven-hour journey. Download tickets, maps and entertainment before boarding.

Does EU roaming work in Montenegro?

No. Montenegro uses the euro but is not in the EU, so Roam Like at Home does not apply and an EU or UK SIM roams out of zone. The currency makes this easy to miss.

Is there Uber in Podgorica?

Not really - the global ride-hailing apps are not established in Montenegro. Taxis are inexpensive and are booked by phone or hailed, and hotels will call one for you. Agree the fare before setting off.

Which is the better airport, Podgorica or Tivat?

Podgorica (TGD) is the main gateway and better for the interior, the north and Albania. Tivat (TIV) is closer to Kotor, Budva and the coastal resorts. Podgorica is 11 km from the city centre and quick to clear.
