Ofte stilte spørsmål om Mexico eSIM

Får jeg et telefonnummer med eSIM-et?
Nei.

Staying connected in Cancun: the local guide

The curve of Cancun's hotel zone beach at sunrise, turquoise Caribbean water meeting white sand

Emergency numbers

  • 911 - all emergencies (nationwide)
  • 078 - tourist assistance line

Time zone

EST (UTC-5) year-round - Quintana Roo runs an hour ahead of most of Mexico (UTC-6) and observes no DST

Weather

Caribbean tropical: 27-32C in every month; Dec-Apr is the dry sunny peak, hurricane season runs Jun-Nov, and sargassum seaweed can appear roughly May-Aug

Cancun was built for visitors, and its mobile coverage shows it. Telcel, the carrier with the deepest reach in Mexico, plus AT&T Mexico and Movistar all put strong 4G (and growing 5G) over the hotel zone strip and the downtown grid of El Centro, and your eSIM connects through one of them. Along the Riviera Maya, signal follows Highway 307 reliably through Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, so the day-trip corridor keeps you online almost the whole way.

Where the signal gets weird

The gaps are inland, not on the coast. Jungle sites like Coba get patchy fast once you walk in from the parking lot, remote cenote parks can sit in dead zones, and inside the cavern cenotes there is simply no signal - download tickets and offline maps before leaving the resort strip. The other honest note is resort Wi-Fi: all-inclusives advertise it everywhere, but it is strongest in the lobby, flaky in far-wing rooms, and gone the moment you board a tour bus or catamaran. The eSIM is not for the pool day; it is for everything off the property.

The one-hour trap nobody warns you about

Quintana Roo keeps its own clock: UTC-5 all year, no daylight saving, while most of Mexico including Mexico City sits at UTC-6. The state switched in 2015 for longer, lighter tourist evenings, and it still burns people on domestic connections and tour pickups. Worse, Chichen Itza and Valladolid are in Yucatan state, one hour behind, so your phone silently jumps an hour mid-day-trip. Everything in Cancun runs on Cancun time; confirm flights and pickups against the airline or operator, not your phone's auto-updated clock.

The apps that need data here

  • Uber exists in Cancun, with an asterisk. The app operates in the city and a 2024 court ruling authorized it at the airport, but federal authorities dispute airport pickups and friction with the local taxi union is well documented. In town it often works fine; at the airport, treat a pre-booked shuttle or the authorized taxi counters as the plan and Uber as a bonus. Drop-offs are straightforward.
  • ADO buses are genuinely excellent for Playa del Carmen and Tulum: modern, air-conditioned, cheap, and bookable in the app with a QR ticket.
  • The Maya Train is real and running, with a station at Cancun airport and roughly three departures a day down the coast. Caveat: the Playa del Carmen and Tulum stations sit well outside their towns, so factor a taxi on the far end before assuming it beats the bus.
  • WhatsApp is how everything gets confirmed - tour operators, ferry schedules, restaurant reservations, your driver saying he is out front.
  • Cards tap almost everywhere in the hotel zone, but downtown markets, taco stands and tips want pesos, so plan one ATM run.

Arriving

Cancun International is Mexico's busiest tourist gateway. The smooth path is a pre-booked shuttle or the authorized taxi counters inside the terminal; the cheap path is the ADO bus to downtown or straight to Playa del Carmen; the new path is the Maya Train from the airport station. Whichever you choose, the arrivals hall is where your hotel pin, driver WhatsApp and "we landed" messages all fire at once - have the eSIM installed and tested before departure rather than negotiating airport Wi-Fi with luggage in hand.

How much data do you need in Cancun?

Less navigation than a big city - the hotel zone is one long boulevard - but far more uploading. Turquoise water does things to a camera roll, and photo backups, reels and video calls home are what actually eat data here. Add ride apps and WhatsApp confirmations and most travelers are comfortable around 1GB per 2-3 days, with headroom if you post in real time. Before day trips, offline-download the Chichen Itza or Coba area the night before. Our Mexico eSIM guide compares the numbers against roaming and airport SIM counters.

What to wear

Resortwear covers the hotel zone, but pack water shoes - cenote ladders and limestone shallows are hard on bare feet. The rule that surprises people: Xcaret-group parks (Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Xplor, Xenotes) only allow sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as active ingredients, and many independent cenotes ask you to rinse off sunscreen entirely before swimming - bring a biodegradable bottle or budget for one at the gate. Downtown dresses a notch more modestly than the beach strip, and bus air-conditioning is arctic, so a light layer earns its space.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

The beach faces east, so sunrise is the show: Playa Delfines at first light gives you the full curve of the coast with almost nobody in frame. On Isla Mujeres, the Punta Sur cliff path delivers the drama shot over open Caribbean. Cenote Suytun's platform-under-the-light-beam works best around midday when the sun shaft drops through the ceiling - expect a queue, roughly a minute per group, shoes off, shower first. At Chichen Itza, be at the gate for opening and shoot El Castillo before the heat and the coaches; at Tulum, the ruins-over-the-sea frame is best early too.

Fun facts

Cancun did not grow, it was selected: in 1970 Mexico's tourism planners at what became FONATUR ran a data-driven site study - popularly retold as the resort "chosen by computer" - and picked a nearly empty sandbar. That sandbar, the hotel zone, is shaped like a number 7. Offshore runs the Mesoamerican Reef, the world's second-largest barrier reef after Australia's. And El Castillo at Chichen Itza is a calendar in stone: its four staircases of 91 steps plus the top platform add up to 365.

Big events

March is spring break, honestly stated: the hotel zone's party stretch gets loud, crowded and pricier for a few weeks. Whale shark season runs roughly June to September off Isla Mujeres and Holbox, peaking July-August - book a licensed boat ahead. Day of the Dead gets a Riviera Maya staging at Xcaret's Festival de Tradiciones de Vida y Muerte, October 30 to November 2. And Carnaval brings parades to Cancun in February, dates shifting yearly ahead of Lent.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The water really is that unreal turquoise, flight connectivity is unbeatable for the Caribbean, and few bases pack this day-trip density: reef, ruins, cenotes and islands all within two hours. The complaints are fair too: the all-inclusive bubble can make a week feel like it happened nowhere in particular, hotel-zone prices run in dollars at dollar levels, sargassum is a genuine roulette on some beaches roughly May through August, and the airport gauntlet of friendly "helpers" is mostly timeshare-presentation recruiting - a polite "no gracias" and a straight line to your transport solves it.

FAQ: Cancun connectivity

Is the all-inclusive resort Wi-Fi enough to skip mobile data?

For pool days, maybe. But resort Wi-Fi is typically lobby-strong and room-weak, and it stays behind when you leave for tours, ferries or downtown dinners - exactly when you need the driver's WhatsApp and live maps. Treat it as the backup and mobile data as the plan.

Will my eSIM work on day trips to Chichen Itza, Tulum and the cenotes?

Along the coastal highway and in every town, yes - coverage on the Riviera Maya corridor is solid. It thins inside jungle sites like Coba and disappears inside cavern cenotes, so download tickets, offline maps and your tour voucher before setting off. Also note Chichen Itza sits one time zone behind Cancun, so double-check pickup times.

Can I take an Uber from Cancun airport?

Officially contested and practically unreliable: despite a 2024 court ruling in Uber's favor, federal authorities dispute app pickups at the airport and taxi-union pressure means few drivers accept rides there. Use a pre-booked shuttle, the authorized taxi counters, the ADO bus or the Maya Train instead, and save Uber for rides within the city, where it works far better.
