Soalan Lazim tentang eSIM Albania

Bilakah saya patut memasang eSIM Albania saya?

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Berat is covered by Albania's two mobile networks, Vodafone Albania and One Albania, and your eSIM rides one of them as its host. The town is small and both networks reach it comfortably with 4G. What complicates things is not the network - it is that Berat is built vertically on two facing hillsides, and the geometry decides where the bars go.

A UNESCO town where people still live inside the castle

Most fortified hilltops in Europe are museums with a ticket office. Berat's Kala is a neighbourhood.

Families live inside the 13th-century walls, in houses along cobbled lanes, with washing lines, cats and cars squeezing through the gate. There are Byzantine churches and the remains of mosques among the homes, and a small population that has never left. You do not tour it so much as walk through somebody's street.

That matters for a visitor in a specific way: it is inhabited, so behave accordingly. Doors that look like attractions are front doors. It is also, practically, why coverage up there is decent - people live there and need service - while the ravines below the walls are worse.

The town of a thousand windows, and what that does to your signal

Berat's UNESCO listing is for its Ottoman housing, and the popular name comes from the tiers of white houses with their large windows stacked up the hillsides.

Two quarters face each other across the Osum river:

  • Mangalem on the north bank, below the castle - the postcard side.
  • Gorica on the south bank, reached by the old footbridge.

Both are steep, narrow and built of stone. Coverage is fine on the open terraces and the main lanes, and drops in the stepped alleys between houses and in the deeper courtyards. It is a small enough town that it never really matters - but your maps app will hesitate exactly when the stairs fork.

The castle climb is a cobbled road that is steeper than it looks and genuinely punishing in August heat. Coverage holds most of the way.

Inside the churches - the Onufri museum in the Church of the Dormition, and the smaller chapels - is thick stone, and quiet.

Getting here is a furgon question

Berat has no airport and no useful railway. It is reached by road, and the road runs on furgons - the shared minibuses that do most of Albania's intercity transport.

From Tirana it is roughly two to two and a half hours. Furgons leave when they fill rather than to a timetable, which is the single most important thing to understand about them, and the schedules that exist online are approximations.

Note the thing covered at more length in the Tirana guide: there is no Uber, Bolt or Lyft in Albania - the global apps do not operate there at all. In Tirana there are domestic dispatch apps; in Berat there are taxis you arrange through your guesthouse. For a day trip out to the Osum canyon or Bogove waterfall, you book a driver, and you agree the price first.

Which is why your data here goes on maps and messaging rather than on hailing anything.

The roaming position

Albania is outside the EU, so an EU or UK SIM roams out of zone. The regional Western Balkans arrangement covers residents of the six countries roaming among themselves, not visitors flying in. The European Commission said in early 2026 it wants to negotiate extending the EU zone here; nothing has changed yet.

If Berat is a stop on an Albania trip, price the roaming for the country rather than the town.

The apps that need data here

  • Offline maps, especially if you are driving. The road from Tirana is fine; the routes out to the Osum canyon and up into the Tomorr massif are not, and signposting is thin.
  • Messaging. Albanian guesthouses run on WhatsApp - your booking, your airport transfer and your driver for the day will all be a thread rather than an email.
  • A translation app. Albanian is a language isolate with no close relatives, so nothing about it is guessable. Italian is widely understood, English less so outside the guesthouses.
  • A currency app. Albania kept the lek and it is cash-first outside hotels. Draw money in Tirana or at a Berat ATM; the villages have none.

How much data do you need in Berat?

Very little. Berat is a one-or-two-night stop for most people, walkable end to end, with the castle and both quarters within an hour's walk of each other.

For a couple of nights, well under 1GB. If you are touring Albania more widely - Gjirokaster, the Riviera, Theth - size up for the mountain roads, where you will be pre-downloading maps. Plans top up from your dashboard.

What to wear

Summer here is severe. Berat sits inland in a river valley and gets considerably hotter than the coast - high thirties is normal in July and August, and the castle climb in the middle of the afternoon is a genuine mistake. Go early or late.

Shoes with grip. Everything here is cobbles, worn stone and steps, and the Mangalem lanes are polished slippery.

Winter is wet, properly so, with Albania's substantial rainfall arriving between November and March. A real waterproof.

Modest dress for the churches and the surviving mosques - shoulders and knees covered.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

Mangalem from the Gorica bridge, in the late afternoon when the sun is on the white facades and every one of those famous windows lights up at once. This is the shot Berat is known for and the light does all of it.

Gorica from Mangalem, the reverse view, which fewer people bother with and which is quieter.

Inside the Kala, early morning, when the residents are out and the tour groups have not yet arrived.

The Onufri Iconography Museum in the castle's Church of the Dormition - a 16th-century master whose reds are still startling.

The Osum canyon, an hour out, where the river has cut a gorge you can raft in spring.

Mount Tomorr rising behind the town, snow-capped into spring - Albania's holy mountain and the site of a major August pilgrimage.

Fun facts

Berat has been continuously inhabited for around 2,400 years, and its castle walls have been rebuilt by Byzantines, Bulgarians, Serbs and Ottomans in turn.

It has been UNESCO-listed since 2008, alongside Gjirokaster, as a rare surviving example of an Ottoman-era town.

The Kala may be the only inhabited castle of its kind in the Balkans - a functioning residential neighbourhood inside medieval fortifications.

And Albania's 170,000 concrete bunkers are here too, scattered through the fields around the town - one of the strangest legacies of the communist period.

Big events

The Tomorr pilgrimage in late August draws tens of thousands of Bektashi pilgrims up the mountain - one of the most significant religious gatherings in Albania and a remarkable thing to witness.

Summer, June to September, is when Berat is busiest and hottest; the town is a standard stop between Tirana and the Riviera.

Spring, April and May, is the best time - the Osum canyon is running for rafting, the valley is green, and the heat has not arrived.

Winter is quiet, wet and cheap, and many guesthouses close.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The love: Berat is one of the most photogenic towns in the Balkans and it has not been ruined. The castle-as-neighbourhood is genuinely unusual, the two quarters facing each other across the river make an unforgettable composition, and it is inexpensive even by Albanian standards. Guesthouse hospitality is exceptional, the food is good and local, and it makes a natural break between Tirana and the coast.

The complaints are modest but real. It is small - one full day covers it, and visitors who allocate three run out of things to do. The summer heat in the valley is punishing. Getting here and away depends on furgons that do not run to a timetable, which frustrates people on tight schedules. And the cobbles are hard work for anyone with mobility difficulties - much of the old town is stepped.

One or two nights, arriving late afternoon for the light on Mangalem, and out again toward Gjirokaster or the coast.

FAQ: Berat connectivity

Does EU roaming work in Albania?

No. Albania is outside the EU and outside Roam Like at Home, so an EU or UK SIM bills at out-of-zone rates. The 2021 Western Balkans arrangement is for residents of the region, not visitors from elsewhere.

Is there Uber in Berat?

No - and not anywhere in Albania, where the global ride-hailing apps do not operate. In Berat you arrange taxis and day drivers through your guesthouse and agree the fare in advance. Intercity travel is by furgon, the shared minibuses that leave when full rather than to a timetable.

Will I have signal in the castle?

Generally yes - the Kala is an inhabited neighbourhood rather than a ruin, so it is served. The stepped alleys of Mangalem and Gorica below are patchier, and the church interiors are thick stone.

How do I get to Berat?

By road, roughly two to two and a half hours from Tirana by furgon or car. There is no airport and no practical rail link. Furgons depart when they fill, so treat published times as indicative.
