Vaša postojeća SIM kartica i dalje drži vaš telefonski broj aktivnim.
Standardni pozivi i SMS i dalje rade na vašem uobičajenom broju preko vašeg domaćeg operatera, sve dok tu SIM karticu držite aktivnom.
Karte i poruke troše malo; video, video pozivi i dijeljenje veze troše najviše. Ako niste sigurni, uzmite prvi veći paket. Ako vam ipak ponestane podataka, novi eSIM možete kupiti u bilo kojem trenutku - za instalaciju će vam trebati WiFi.
Koje ću mrežne brzine dobiti u Sjeverna Makedonija?
Vaš Sjeverna Makedonija eSIM koristi lokalnu mobilnu mrežu: do 4G. Brzina ovisi o pokrivenosti i vašoj lokaciji.
Kada trebam instalirati svoj Sjeverna Makedonija eSIM?

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Vrijeme

Continental, in a basin that traps whatever is in the air: hot dry summers (32-36C), cold winters around freezing, and a temperature inversion between November and February that holds smog over the city for days

Skopje runs on A1 Macedonia and Makedonski Telekom, and this eSIM uses A1, on 4G. Both have been building 5G since 2022, with A1 generally ahead inside Skopje and Telekom close behind - the country has been an unusually early 5G mover for its size in the region. Across the city you get dense 4G, and you will not think about coverage until you leave the basin.

The app locals check before they check the weather

Skopje sits in a bowl ringed by mountains, and in winter that bowl becomes a lid. A temperature inversion settles over the city and holds wood smoke, traffic fumes and industrial output in place, sometimes for days. Skopje has repeatedly ranked among the most polluted cities in Europe during these episodes.

Residents live by air-quality apps between November and February, and visitors should too. This is the genuinely Skopje-specific reason your data matters: an AQI reading decides whether today is a walking day or a museum day, whether the Vodno hike is a good idea, and whether anyone with asthma should be outdoors at all. The readings change fast and vary sharply by neighbourhood, so a live app beats a forecast.

Summer flips the problem: the same basin bakes, and 36C in a windless bowl is its own kind of planning problem.

Where the signal gets weird

Matka Canyon is the one to plan for. Fifteen kilometres from the centre, the gorge walls close in hard and coverage drops off along the water. The Vrelo Cave - one of the deepest underwater caves anywhere, still not fully mapped - offers nothing at all, and neither do the kayak stretches deeper into the canyon. Download the map and your return-taxi arrangement before you leave the city, because getting back from Matka is the part people improvise badly.

The Old Bazaar's covered lanes. Carsija is the largest Ottoman bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul, and its roofed sections and han courtyards do what thick stone and tin roofs always do.

Vodno and the Millennium Cross. The cable car up is fine and the summit has line of sight over the whole basin, but the forest switchbacks on the walking trails are patchy.

Underpasses around the central squares, of which Skopje has many.

A city where the map and the ground disagree

Skopje is a reconstruction twice over, and it affects navigation more than you would expect.

The 1963 earthquake destroyed roughly 80% of the city, and what replaced it was ambitious modernism - most famously the brutalist post office and the concrete of the central train station, whose clock still shows the time the earthquake struck.

Then came Skopje 2014, a state project that wrapped much of the centre in neoclassical facades and filled the squares with several hundred statues, fountains and columns. The result is a downtown that looks nothing like its own photographs from twenty years ago, and rather little like the rest of the country.

Practically: newer buildings sit behind older-looking fronts, some street names have changed, and older map data can be wrong about both. Cross the Stone Bridge - genuinely 15th-century, and the one thing on the axis that is exactly what it appears to be - and you are in the Ottoman Old Bazaar, which is a different city entirely.

The apps that need data here

  • An AQI app, as above, from November to February.
  • Maps, with recent data. See the section above; older cached maps handle the rebuilt centre badly.
  • Taxis are cheap and metered, and Skopje's are famously among the least expensive in Europe. Local apps and phone dispatch both work; Uber and Bolt are not the default here the way they are in bigger capitals. Agree or check the meter.
  • A translation app. Macedonian is Cyrillic; the Old Bazaar is largely Albanian-speaking; English is common among younger people and thinner elsewhere.

The roaming question

Candidate status is not membership. North Macedonia has been queuing for the EU since 2005 and is still outside it, which for your phone means Roam Like at Home does not reach here and an EU or UK SIM bills at out-of-zone rates.

There is a regional arrangement, agreed in 2021, that lets people living in the six Western Balkans states use their own plans across all six. It is designed for the region's own residents and does nothing for someone who flew in from Frankfurt. Brussels signalled in February 2026 that it would like to extend the EU zone this way; that is an intention, not a tariff change.

Worth planning around if Skopje is one stop on a Balkans loop, because Belgrade, Tirana and Kotor are all outside the zone too - the whole trip is out of zone, not just this leg.

Arriving

Skopje International (SKP) is about 20 km east of the centre. The Vardar Express shuttle bus runs into town cheaply; taxis are metered and inexpensive by European standards, though the airport rank is one of the few places in Skopje where the price conversation happens.

Denar is the currency and Skopje is more cash-oriented than card-oriented outside hotels and larger restaurants. ATMs are plentiful; airport exchange is worse than town.

How much data do you need in Skopje?

Light to moderate. The centre is compact and walkable, taxis are cheap enough that you barely plan routes, and most visitors are here two or three nights as part of a wider Balkans trip.

For a long weekend, 1GB per 3 days is comfortable. Add headroom for a Matka day, where you will be pre-downloading maps, and for the drive to Ohrid if that is on the itinerary. Plans top up from your dashboard.

What to wear

Layers, and a genuine winter coat if you come between December and February - the basin gets properly cold and damp, and the smog makes it feel worse. A mask is not unusual on bad-air days.

Summer needs the opposite: 36C in a windless bowl, so light clothing, a hat and water. The Old Bazaar's mosques expect covered shoulders and knees, and it is a working religious quarter rather than a museum.

Walking shoes throughout. Skopje's centre is flat and easy, but Vodno, Matka and the bazaar's cobbles are not.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

The Stone Bridge with the Old Bazaar behind it, shot from the Macedonia Square side in the late afternoon - the one frame that contains both Skopjes at once.

The Old Bazaar itself, early, before the day warms and while the shutters are still going up. It is the largest Ottoman bazaar in the Balkans after Istanbul's and it is still a working market rather than a souvenir strip.

Matka Canyon from the water. Hire a kayak or take the boat to Vrelo Cave; the gorge from water level is the country's best-known landscape shot.

The Millennium Cross on Vodno at sunset, with the whole basin below - take the cable car up and time it for the last hour of light.

Kale Fortress for the elevated view back over the rebuilt centre.

Fun facts

Mother Teresa was born in Skopje in 1910, and there is a memorial house on the street where she lived.

The old railway station's clock is stopped at 5:17 - the moment the 1963 earthquake hit - and the ruined building is now the city museum.

Skopje 2014 added several hundred statues and monuments to a city centre of modest size, which is why the squares feel so crowded with bronze.

And Vrelo Cave at Matka is one of the deepest underwater caves known anywhere, with divers still not having found its bottom.

Big events

Skopje Jazz Festival in October is long-running and genuinely well regarded.

Skopje Summer Festival fills July with open-air performance.

Vevcani Carnival in January is not in Skopje but is the country's most famous winter event, and worth the trip.

And the inversion season, November to February, is the one to plan around rather than celebrate.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The love: Skopje is cheap, genuinely so - taxis, food and beer at prices that surprise anyone arriving from Western Europe. The Old Bazaar is one of the best-preserved Ottoman quarters in the Balkans. Matka Canyon is half an hour from the centre and spectacular. And the city is a fascinating, slightly surreal case study in what happens when a state decides to rebuild its own identity in stone.

The complaints are pointed. The winter air is a real health issue, not an inconvenience. Skopje 2014 divides people sharply - some find it charmingly excessive, many find it kitsch built over genuinely interesting modernist architecture. The centre can feel like a film set with a real city hidden behind it. And beyond the bazaar and the squares there is not a great deal to fill a long stay.

Two or three days, ideally not in January, with a day at Matka - and Skopje is one of the better-value stops in the Balkans.

FAQ: Skopje connectivity

Does EU roaming work in North Macedonia?

No. North Macedonia is an EU candidate, not a member, so Roam Like at Home does not apply and an EU or UK SIM roams out of zone. The same is true across the Balkans loop - Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and Bosnia are all outside it.

Will I have signal at Matka Canyon?

Not reliably. The gorge walls cut coverage along the water, and Vrelo Cave has none at all. Download maps and sort your return transport before you leave the city.

Does Skopje have 5G?

Yes, in the central areas, with A1 generally ahead inside the city and Makedonski Telekom close behind. Both have been rolling out since 2022, but this eSIM connects at 4G - which is dense everywhere a visitor goes.

Do I need an air-quality app?

Between November and February, genuinely yes. The city sits in a basin that traps smog during winter inversions, readings vary sharply by neighbourhood and change quickly, and locals plan their days around them.
