Παίρνω αριθμό τηλεφώνου με την eSIM;
Όχι.
Μπορώ να πραγματοποιώ ή να λαμβάνω κλήσεις και γραπτά μηνύματα (SMS);
Πόσα δεδομένα χρειάζομαι για Ελλάδα;
Τι ταχύτητες δικτύου θα έχω στην Ελλάδα;
Μπορώ να χρησιμοποιήσω την eSIM μου για hotspot/tethering;
Πότε πρέπει να εγκαταστήσω την eSIM Ελλάδα μου;

Weather

Mediterranean with a wet winter - the Ionian islands are the rainiest part of Greece. Summers are hot and dry at 28-33C from June to September; winters are mild and genuinely wet at 10-15C

Zakynthos runs on Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova, and your eSIM rides one of them as its host. Coverage across the island is good, EU roaming applies without qualification, and the network is not going to be your problem here. Two things will shape your trip more than anything technical: the island's most famous beach is closed, and the island's most famous residents are protected by rules that your phone can break without you realising.

This is the single most important thing to know before booking, and guides published as recently as last season still get it wrong.

You cannot land on Shipwreck Beach. Access to the sand, and swimming in the bay, are prohibited - the restriction runs through at least the end of October 2026 and has been extended more than once.

The reason is rockfall. The cove is enclosed by limestone cliffs around 200 metres high, and geotechnical assessment found heavily fractured rock and overhanging masses above the beach. A visitor was seriously injured in a fall, which sharpened the decision.

You can still see it, legally, two ways. The clifftop viewpoint above the cove is open and free, and the platform has been reinforced - this is where the famous photograph is taken from, and it always was. And boat trips still run, approaching to a safety boundary offshore rather than landing.

Book a boat trip on that understanding. Operators are clear about it, but anyone selling you a landing is selling something they cannot deliver.

Do not improvise a way down. People have tried, and the cliffs are exactly the hazard the closure exists for.

It is still worth seeing. The view from above is the iconic one, and the boat approach shows you the scale. Just arrive knowing what the day is.

Turtles, and why your torch matters

Zakynthos is one of the most important loggerhead nesting sites in the Mediterranean, and Laganas Bay is protected by a National Marine Park with rules that are enforced.

Loggerheads - Caretta caretta - nest on the bay's beaches through the summer, with hatchlings emerging into the autumn.

Nesting beaches close at night. Access between sunset and sunrise is prohibited in the protected zones during the season. This is not advisory.

Do not use a torch or a flash on the beach at night. Hatchlings orient themselves towards the brightest horizon, which should be the sea reflecting the sky. A phone torch, a camera flash or a bright screen pulls them inland, away from the water, where they die. This is the most common way a well-meaning visitor does real harm here.

No flash photography of turtles, at sea or on land.

Boat zones and speed limits apply across the bay, because propeller strikes are a serious cause of injury. Reputable operators observe them.

Sunbeds and umbrellas are restricted on nesting beaches, and holes dug in the sand should be filled in - a hatchling that falls into one does not get out.

The protected zones are signposted, and volunteers and wardens are present through the season. Take the signs at face value.

None of this stops you seeing turtles. Boat trips from Laganas and Keri see them regularly, and doing it with an operator that keeps to the rules is both better for the animals and a better trip.

Where the signal gets weird

The island is well covered - the town, Laganas, Tsilivi, Alykes and the main roads are all fine.

The west coast cliffs are the gap. The road along the top has coverage; the coves below, including Navagio, are shadowed by several hundred metres of rock.

The Blue Caves at Cape Skinari, in the far north, are patchy - sea caves in a cliff face behave as you would expect.

On boat trips generally, expect it to come and go. The bay is fine; the west coast is not.

The mountainous interior, around Agios Leon and the western villages, thins in the valleys.

Marathonisi and the islets in Laganas Bay are covered from the mainland masts, mostly.

The 1953 earthquake explains what you are looking at

Useful context, because visitors often wonder why an island this old looks this new.

In August 1953 a major earthquake struck the Ionian islands, and Zakynthos was near the epicentre. Almost the entire island was destroyed, and fire finished much of what the shaking left.

Zakynthos Town was rebuilt deliberately in its Venetian style rather than in concrete, which is why the arcaded streets and the Solomos Square look coherent but the stonework looks young.

A handful of buildings survived, including the church of Agios Dionysios, and they are pointed out with some pride.

Venetian rule lasted around 300 years here, which is why the architecture, the surnames and a good deal of the vocabulary are what they are. The island was called Fior di Levante, the flower of the East.

The apps that need data here

  • Maps, with offline copies for the west coast roads, which are narrow and poorly signed.
  • A boat operator's own booking app or site, since trips are the main way to see the island's coast.
  • A weather app, particularly for wind, which cancels boat trips more often than rain does.
  • A translation app is optional. Greek is the language, English is spoken universally in tourism, and signage is bilingual.
  • Cards work widely, though smaller tavernas and beach bars still prefer cash - carry some euros.

Arriving

Zakynthos International (ZTH), named for Dionysios Solomos, is about 5 km south of the town and a few minutes from Laganas. It is small, seasonal and dominated by charter flights from northern Europe in summer.

Ferries run from Kyllini on the Peloponnese to Zakynthos Town in about an hour, and there is a northern route from Pesada on Kefalonia.

Car hire is close to essential. Buses connect the main resorts to the town and little else, and the west coast and the interior need your own transport.

The roads are narrow and winding once you leave the eastern plain, and the drive to the Navagio viewpoint in particular is slow.

How much data do you need in Zakynthos?

Very little. It is a small island, wifi is everywhere in the resorts, and EU visitors are on their home allowance. Download offline maps for the west coast and you have covered the only real gap.

What to wear

Beach clothes and something for the evening, which is most of it.

Proper shoes for the cliff viewpoints. The ground at the Navagio overlook is uneven and, given why the beach is shut, not somewhere to be casual.

A layer for boat trips, where the wind off the water is cooler than the beach suggests.

Modest dress for monasteries - shoulders and knees covered, and wraps are usually provided.

Strong sun protection, and reef shoes for the pebbly coves.

A rain jacket outside summer, because these are the wettest islands in Greece.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

Navagio from the clifftop viewpoint, which is the shot - and now the only legal land-based one.

The Blue Caves at Cape Skinari, in the morning, when the light through the water turns the cave walls electric blue.

Porto Limnionas, a rocky swimming inlet on the west coast with no sand and very clear water.

Marathonisi, the turtle-shaped islet in Laganas Bay, from a boat.

Keri lighthouse at sunset, on the southwestern cliffs.

Zakynthos Town's Solomos Square and the arcaded streets, rebuilt Venetian.

Bochali hill, above the town, for the view over the harbour.

Xigia beach, where sulphur springs make the water milky and cold.

Fun facts

Zakynthos saved its entire Jewish population in the Second World War. When the occupying authorities demanded a list of the island's Jews, Mayor Loukas Karrer and Bishop Chrysostomos submitted a paper with two names on it - their own. The community was hidden in villages across the island, and all 275 survived. It is among the most complete rescues anywhere in occupied Europe.

Dionysios Solomos was born here, and wrote the poem that became the Greek national anthem. The airport carries his name.

The shipwreck is the Panagiotis, which ran aground in 1980. Accounts of what it was carrying vary and the smuggling version is the popular one.

The island was Venetian for about three centuries and never fell to the Ottomans, which sets it apart from most of Greece.

The 1953 earthquake destroyed nearly every building on the island, and the town you walk through is a deliberate reconstruction.

And the Ionian islands are the wettest part of Greece, which is why Zakynthos is so much greener than the Aegean islands people compare it to.

Big events

The feast of Agios Dionysios, 24 August, the island's patron saint, with a procession through the town and the largest celebration of the year.

Carnival, in February, with Venetian-influenced traditions.

The turtle nesting season, roughly late May to October, which is not an event but governs the rules above.

Summer, June to September, is the season - hot, busy and when everything is open.

October to April sees most resorts close entirely, ferries reduce and the island returns to itself.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The love: Zakynthos has genuinely spectacular coastline - the west coast cliffs, the sea caves and the coves are among the best in Greece - and the water colour is not exaggerated in photographs. It is green and fertile in a way Aegean islands are not, the food and wine are good and cheap, the town is a handsome Venetian rebuild, and the marine park means you can reliably see wild loggerhead turtles in the Mediterranean.

The complaints are consistent. Laganas is a hard-partying strip that dominates the island's reputation and is best avoided if that is not what you came for. Navagio's closure disappoints people who booked without checking - which is now the single most common source of complaint here. You need a car, and the west coast roads are slow. August is crowded and expensive. It shuts down almost entirely in winter. And the tension between mass tourism and the marine park is visible in places and not always resolved in the turtles' favour.

Come in June or September, base yourself outside Laganas, see Navagio from the top and from a boat, and take a turtle trip with an operator who talks about the rules before you ask.

FAQ: Zakynthos connectivity

Can I visit Shipwreck Beach?

Not the beach itself. Landing on the sand and swimming in the bay are prohibited through at least the end of October 2026 because of rockfall risk from the 200-metre cliffs, and the closure has been extended before. The clifftop viewpoint above the cove is open and free, and boat trips still run up to a safety boundary offshore. Anyone selling you a landing cannot deliver it.

Why should I not use my phone torch on the beach at night?

Because loggerhead hatchlings navigate towards the brightest horizon, which should be the sea. A torch, a flash or a bright screen draws them inland, where they die. Nesting beaches in the marine park are also closed between sunset and sunrise during the season, and that closure is enforced.

Does EU roaming work here?

Yes, fully - Greece is in the EU and the eurozone, so an EU or EEA SIM uses its home allowance with no surcharge. Unlike the Dodecanese islands nearer the Turkish coast, Zakynthos is in the Ionian and there is no risk of your phone hopping onto a foreign network.

Will I have signal on a boat trip?

Patchily. Laganas Bay and the east coast are fine. The west coast, where Navagio and the Blue Caves are, sits beneath several hundred metres of cliff and drops out for stretches. Download offline maps if you are driving the western roads, which are narrow and poorly signed.
