Frequently Asked Questions about Japan eSIM

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need for Japan?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Japan?
Your Japan eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I use my eSIM for hotspot/tethering?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Japan eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Japan. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Airport WiFi & Internet in Japan

Your eSIM for Japan - no Wi-Fi router to rent

A single plan covers the whole country, so the same eSIM works in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and beyond. Install it before you fly, switch off airplane mode on arrival, and you are online - no pocket Wi-Fi router to collect, carry, charge and return.

Skip the airport SIM machine - online at Narita, Haneda and Kansai

The eSIM connects the moment you turn off airplane mode at Tokyo Narita (NRT), Haneda (HND) or Osaka Kansai (KIX). You can buy your Narita Express or Skyliner ticket, navigate the station and look up your hotel before you join the queue - no SIM vending machine or rental desk needed.

Coverage in the cities, subways and countryside

Japan's networks - NTT Docomo, SoftBank and au (KDDI) - offer some of the world's most reliable mobile coverage, with 5G across the cities and signal deep in the subway systems. That keeps live maps, translation apps and transit planners working as you change trains.

Riding the Shinkansen and day trips

The same eSIM keeps you connected on the Shinkansen bullet trains between Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, and on day trips to Hakone, Nikko or the Mt Fuji area. Mountain and rural stretches can briefly drop, so download offline maps for hiking and hot-spring excursions.

Good to know before you go

Do I still need to rent a pocket Wi-Fi router?+

No - the eSIM replaces it. You get your own data straight on your phone, with nothing to pick up at the airport, carry around, recharge or post back.

Does it work on the Tokyo subway and the Shinkansen?+

Yes. Japan has excellent subway coverage, so maps and transit apps work underground, and you stay online on the Shinkansen between the major cities, with only brief dips in long tunnels.

Is coverage good outside the big cities?+

Coverage is strong across towns and tourist areas like Hakone, Nikko and the Mt Fuji region. Remote mountains and trails can lose signal, so save offline maps for hikes.
