One eSIM from Istanbul to Cappadocia
One plan covers the whole country - Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya and the Aegean coast. Buy and install it at home while you still have WiFi, then switch off airplane mode when you land: you are online without queuing for a local SIM at the airport.
It is a data-only eSIM: you get mobile internet, not a Turkish phone number. Calls and messages work through apps like WhatsApp, and any app that sends you an SMS code will send it to your usual number. You need an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone.
How much data you will actually use in Turkey
Usually less than people expect. On the 15-day 10 GB plan we used to sell, half of the eSIMs used 5 GB or less - but one in five used all 10 GB. On the former 15-day 20 GB plan, half used about 8 GB or less, and fewer than one in six ran out.
So for a week or two: 10 GB suits maps, messaging and the odd video call; take 20 GB if you upload a lot of photos and video, share your connection with someone else, or work from your phone. Today's 10 GB and 20 GB plans run for 30 days, so they cover a two-week trip with room to spare. Unlimited plans are also available by the day; a fair-use policy applies, so speed can be reduced after heavy daily use, and unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
How we know: 273 finished Turkey eSIMs from our own orders between March and September 2026 (148 on the 10 GB plan, 125 on the 20 GB plan), measured by the data each one actually used, checked on 2 October 2026. Someone who topped up counts twice. One in five of our Turkey orders comes from a returning customer.
Is eSIM banned in Turkey? Do you need to register your phone?
No. Travel eSIMs work normally in Turkey, and a holiday or business trip does not require registering your phone. Turkey's IMEI registration rule is about phones used with a Turkish SIM card: those can be used unregistered for up to 120 days, and must be registered, with a fee paid, before that period ends or the phone is cut off from Turkish networks. A phone roaming on a travel eSIM is not what that rule is aimed at.
One practical point: several eSIM providers have reported their websites and apps being blocked from inside Turkey, while eSIMs that are already installed keep working. So buy and install yours before you travel rather than after you land.
Moving to Turkey, or buying a Turkish SIM for a long stay? Rules can change: check the current ones and register on the official e-Devlet page, turkiye.gov.tr/btk-imei-kaydet. This reflects the official guidance as of October 2026.
Online from the moment you land at Turkey's main airports
Switch off airplane mode, make sure data roaming is on for the eSIM line, and you are online at: Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), Antalya (AYT), Dalaman (DLM), Bodrum (BJV), İzmir (ADB) and Ankara Esenboğa (ESB). Flying to Cappadocia? Both of its airports - Nevşehir (NAV), the closer one, and Kayseri (ASR) - are covered too, so the transfer to Göreme can be booked from your phone as you land.
Which network you will be on: Turkcell or Türk Telekom
Your eSIM connects to Turkcell or Türk Telekom (whose mobile brand was Avea until 2016), two of Turkey's three national networks - so if one is weak where you are, the eSIM can use the other. If it does not switch on its own, choose the network manually in your phone's mobile settings.
Both networks have fast 4G in the cities, along the resort coasts and around Cappadocia, and Turkey switched on 5G in April 2026: where it has reached and your phone supports it, the eSIM can use it. To get online, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and choose it as your mobile data line. Coverage thins out on remote valley floors and mountain passes, as anywhere - download offline maps before a hike or a long drive inland.
