Cik daudz datu man vajag Tanzānija?
Tas ir atkarīgs no izvēlētā plāna. No gandrīz 3 000 mūsu klientu beigušajām eSIM tipiskā izmantoja no pusei līdz divām trešdaļām sava plāna, bet mazākajos plānos (1-5 GB) aptuveni katra trešā to izlietoja pilnībā.
Kad man vajadzētu uzstādīt Tanzānija eSIM?
Instalējiet savu eSIM, kamēr mājās vēl ir WiFi - abu veidu plānus ir droši instalēt vairākas dienas iepriekš. Uz GB balstītie plāni sākas tikai tad, kad eSIM pirmo reizi pieslēdzas tīklam valstī Tanzānija. Neierobežotie plāni darbojas pēc ceļojuma datumiem, ko izvēlaties pirkuma noformēšanas brīdī, un dienas tiek skaitītas no izvēlētā sākuma datuma neatkarīgi no tā, vai eSIM ir instalēta - tāpēc parūpējieties, lai līdz tam datumam tā būtu jūsu tālrunī.

Setting up your eSIM? The installation and activation guide walks through it step by step, and the full FAQ covers device compatibility, hotspot, dual SIM and topping up.

Staying connected in Zanzibar: the local guide

Emergency numbers

  • 112 - all emergencies (main line on all networks; response can be slow)
  • 999 - police (alternative line)
  • Tourist police patrol Stone Town and the beach hubs - approach in person; there is no dedicated hotline

Time zone

EAT (UTC+3, no daylight saving)

Weather

Tropical: warm year-round (27-33C days); Jun-Oct is the cooler dry season, Mar-May the long rains, Nov-Dec short rains

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so it runs on Tanzania's national networks - Vodacom, Airtel, and Yas (the operator formerly known as Tigo, rebranded in late 2024 after absorbing Zantel, historically the island's home carrier) - and this eSIM uses Vodacom, on 4G/5G. In practice that means solid 4G in Stone Town, Zanzibar Town, and the northern beach hubs of Nungwi and Kendwa, which are dense with hotels and well covered year-round.

Where the signal gets honest

The east coast is where expectations need managing. Central Paje is fine, but some resorts around Jambiani, Michamvi, and the quieter ends of Paje sit in weaker pockets - you will usually have signal on the beach and at the resort entrance, with softer bars deep inside walled compounds. And do not build your plan around hotel Wi-Fi: island Wi-Fi is famously patchy, often shared across an entire resort, and it dies with the island's periodic power cuts. Generators keep the lights on; the router is rarely the priority. Mobile data on your own eSIM is the reliable layer, not the backup.

The apps that need data here

  • WhatsApp runs the island. Drivers, guesthouse hosts, spice-farm tours, Safari Blue boat trips, kite schools in Paje - everything is arranged and confirmed by WhatsApp, often the evening before. Getting prices in writing before you get in the car is also your best negotiating tool.
  • There is no Uber. Bolt was licensed in Zanzibar recently and works in a small zone around Stone Town and the airport, but cars are scarce and waits of 15-20 minutes are normal. Everywhere else it is negotiated taxis, private drivers, or dala-dala minibuses.
  • Cash is king for tourists. Locals pay with mobile money (Vodacom's M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas), but those wallets need a registered local SIM, so as a visitor you will mostly use Tanzanian shillings and some USD. Cards work at bigger resorts; tap-to-pay is not a street-level thing here.
  • Tide tables matter. The east coast ocean retreats hundreds of meters at low tide, while Nungwi and Kendwa swim all day - checking tides (and wind forecasts, if you are here for kite season) is a daily data habit.

Arriving: two queues, or one

At Zanzibar's airport (ZNZ), the visa and immigration line can run 45 minutes in high season, and the SIM kiosks after it add a second queue with passport checks and fingerprint registration - Tanzanian law requires biometric SIM registration at the point of sale. With an eSIM installed before you fly, you connect while still in the visa line and walk straight past the kiosks. Coming by sea instead? The Azam Marine fast ferry from Dar es Salaam takes about two hours and sells e-tickets online, which is exactly the kind of booking you want data for before you reach the port.

How much data do you need in Zanzibar?

Stone Town is a UNESCO-listed maze where street names barely exist, so navigation is GPS-heavy - download offline maps, but expect live corrections. Add all-day WhatsApp coordination, photo uploads, and tide or wind checks, and most travelers land around 3-5GB per week. The Paje remote-work crowd should size up: with resort Wi-Fi unreliable, your phone's hotspot becomes the office connection, and video calls burn about 1GB per hour. The full Zanzibar guide breaks down the plans, including using the same eSIM for a mainland safari leg.

What to wear

Zanzibar is a conservative, overwhelmingly Muslim island, and the dress code shifts sharply at the beach gate. At resorts and on the sand, swimwear is fine; in Stone Town, villages, and markets, cover shoulders and knees - that goes for men too, though women feel the scrutiny more. A kanga or sarong in the daypack solves most situations. During Ramadan, dress extra modestly and eat discreetly in public by day. Pack light, breathable fabrics, and reef shoes if you plan to walk the east coast flats at low tide - sea urchins are real.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

Stone Town's carved wooden doors, studded with brass, photograph best in soft mid-morning light while the alleys are still shaded and quiet - and ask before including people in the frame; it is the firm local norm, especially with women, and Maasai guards on the beaches often expect payment for portraits. For sunset, the rooftop and waterfront terraces facing the dhow harbor are the classic shot - arrive an hour early in high season. Nakupenda sandbank (the name means "I love you" in Swahili) is a short boat hop from Stone Town; go on a morning tide before the crowds and before the water reclaims it. Drones need a Tanzanian civil aviation permit arranged well in advance - do not just pack one.

Fun facts

Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town in 1946; the Freddie Mercury Museum on Kenyatta Road marks the family's old neighborhood. Stone Town also hosted the shortest war in recorded history: the Anglo-Zanzibar War of 27 August 1896 lasted roughly 38 to 45 minutes. And the "Spice Island" tag is earned - 19th-century Zanzibar was the world's leading clove producer.

Big events

Sauti za Busara turns Stone Town into East Africa's biggest live-music stage every February (the 2026 edition ran 5-8 February). ZIFF, the Zanzibar International Film Festival, follows in late June or July (24-28 June in 2026). Mwaka Kogwa, the Shirazi New Year in late July, brings ritual banana-stem fights and hut burnings to Makunduchi village. And the calendar breathes with Islam: during Ramadan, daytime Stone Town runs quiet, then Eid al-Fitr erupts into days of street celebration.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The rave reviews are deserved: Nungwi and Kendwa sand really is that white, the water really is that warm, and few places layer Swahili, Arab, Persian, and Indian history as densely as Stone Town, with spice farms an easy half-day out. The complaints are just as real. Beach touts - "papasi" - work the popular stretches with persistent sales patter, and a firm, friendly "hapana asante" on repeat is part of the routine. East coast swimming is tide-dependent: the ocean walks out hundreds of meters twice a day. And power cuts still punctuate island life, so paradise occasionally runs on generator hum.

FAQ: Zanzibar connectivity

Do I need a separate Zanzibar eSIM or a Tanzania one?

They are the same thing - Zanzibar has no separate mobile networks or country code. A Tanzania eSIM works in Stone Town, Nungwi, Paje, and across the mainland too, so one plan covers a Serengeti safari and the beach week.

Can I work remotely from Paje on mobile data?

Many people do - 4G in central Paje handles calls and hotspot duty, and it is more dependable than resort Wi-Fi. Pick accommodation toward the village center rather than a remote walled compound, keep a power bank charged for outage days, and size your plan for hotspot use.

Is there Uber or Bolt in Zanzibar?

No Uber. Bolt operates in a limited zone around Stone Town and the airport, with few cars and real wait times. For everything else, agree taxi fares in advance - ideally by WhatsApp, in writing - or have your hotel arrange a driver.
