Cik daudz datu man vajag Spānija?
Tas ir atkarīgs no izvēlētā plāna. No gandrīz 3 000 mūsu klientu beigušajām eSIM tipiskā izmantoja no pusei līdz divām trešdaļām sava plāna, bet mazākajos plānos (1-5 GB) aptuveni katra trešā to izlietoja pilnībā.
Kad man vajadzētu uzstādīt Spānija eSIM?
Instalējiet savu eSIM, kamēr mājās vēl ir WiFi - abu veidu plānus ir droši instalēt vairākas dienas iepriekš. Uz GB balstītie plāni sākas tikai tad, kad eSIM pirmo reizi pieslēdzas tīklam valstī Spānija. Neierobežotie plāni darbojas pēc ceļojuma datumiem, ko izvēlaties pirkuma noformēšanas brīdī, un dienas tiek skaitītas no izvēlētā sākuma datuma neatkarīgi no tā, vai eSIM ir instalēta - tāpēc parūpējieties, lai līdz tam datumam tā būtu jūsu tālrunī.

Staying connected in Benidorm: the local guide

Emergency numbers

  • 112 - all emergencies, works from any phone

Time zone

CET (UTC+1), CEST (UTC+2) in summer

Weather

A sheltered microclimate that is the entire reason the town exists: mild all year, 16-18C in winter, 28-31C in summer, and over 300 days of sunshine. The mountains behind block the worst of the weather in both directions

Benidorm runs on Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Yoigo, and this eSIM uses Movistar, Orange, Vodafone or Yoigo, on 4G/5G. Coverage here is excellent and for an unusual reason: a town of 77,000 residents that hosts millions of visitors a year, packed into a couple of square kilometres of high-rise, is one of the easiest places in Europe to serve with a mobile network. Everything is close to a mast and nothing is far from anything. The density that makes people either love or mock this town is also why your phone works perfectly on a crowded August beach.

The most vertical city on earth, and it was deliberate

Benidorm is genuinely extraordinary as a piece of urban planning, whatever you think of how it looks.

It has more skyscrapers per inhabitant than anywhere in the world. With a registered population of around 77,000, it has more than 60 buildings over 25 storeys and 26 exceeding 100 metres - roughly one 100-metre tower for every 3,000 residents. New York, Dubai, Hong Kong and Tokyo are not close on that measure.

By density per square kilometre it is second only to New York, and third in Europe for concentration of tall buildings after London and Milan.

This was a plan, not an accident. In 1956 the mayor, Pedro Zaragoza, adopted a development model that pushed the town upwards rather than outwards along the coast.

The consequence is the thing people miss. Because Benidorm went vertical, it did not sprawl - the coastline either side stays comparatively open, the town is genuinely walkable end to end, and the whole population is served by short infrastructure runs.

Planners take it seriously. Benidorm is regularly cited as one of the more sustainable models on the Spanish coast: low land take per bed, efficient services, and a population that walks rather than drives. That sits oddly with its reputation, and it is nonetheless the case.

Whether you find it thrilling or appalling is a matter of taste. It is not, however, thoughtless.

Two beaches, two towns

Levante and Poniente are the two great curves of sand, separated by the old fishing village on its headland.

Levante, to the east, is the international end - the British and Northern European bars, the cabaret, the strip. English is the working language of much of it.

Poniente, to the west, is markedly more Spanish, quieter, and where a lot of Spanish families and retirees stay.

The old town on the headland between them is the original village: narrow streets, the blue-domed church, tapas bars and the Balcón del Mediterráneo, the viewpoint everyone photographs.

Choose your end deliberately. People who book Levante expecting Poniente, or the reverse, are the source of most disappointed reviews of this town.

The winter town nobody outside Europe knows about

Benidorm's second season is the one that explains it.

The microclimate is the asset. The Sierra Helada and the mountains behind shelter the bay, and winter days sit around 16-18C in bright sun when northern Europe is dark and wet.

So the town does not close. From roughly November to March, tens of thousands of Northern European and Spanish retirees move in for weeks or months - the hotels stay open, the entertainment runs, and the beach promenade is busy at midday in January.

This is a completely different Benidorm from the August one: calmer, cheaper, older, and pleasant in a way the summer version is not.

For long stays there are rules that changed after Brexit for British visitors specifically, and our Alicante guide sets out the 90/180 position in detail - it applies identically here and it is the single biggest change to how this coast works.

For connectivity, the practical point is that a winter stay is measured in weeks or months rather than days, which changes the maths on roaming charges against a local or travel data plan entirely.

Where the signal gets weird

Almost nowhere in town. The density works in your favour and coverage is strong throughout, on both beaches and in the old town.

Inside the taller towers, upper floors occasionally do odd things - you can find yourself picking up a distant cell rather than the near one, which is a known quirk of very tall residential blocks.

The Sierra Helada cliff park, between Benidorm and Albir, thins on the trails.

Puig Campana and the mountains inland drop out in the valleys - this is half an hour away and a completely different landscape.

Guadalest, the reservoir village up in the hills, is patchy in the gorge.

Boat trips to Benidorm Island, the wedge-shaped rock offshore, are fine near the town and variable at the island itself.

The apps that need data here

  • A transit app for the TRAM light rail, which runs along the coast to Alicante and up towards Denia - our Alicante guide covers the line in detail.
  • Maps, though you will barely need them: the town is a grid between two beaches and walkable end to end.
  • AEMET for weather, especially in autumn.
  • A translation app is close to unnecessary on the Levante side, where English is everywhere, and useful on the Poniente side and in the old town.
  • Cards work universally. Contactless everywhere.

Arriving

Alicante-Elche (ALC) is about 60 km southwest and the airport for almost everyone, with a huge low-cost network from across northern Europe.

Airport buses run direct to Benidorm and take around an hour; taxis and transfers do the same run faster and dearer.

The TRAM connects from Alicante along the coast and is scenic but slow if you are carrying luggage from a flight.

Once here, you do not need a car. Benidorm is one of the most walkable resort towns in Spain, and buses cover what your feet do not. A car is only worth it for the inland villages.

How much data do you need in Benidorm?

Very little for a week. Wifi is universal, the town is small, and EU visitors are on their home allowance. The exception is the long winter stay, where weeks or months of daily roaming fees make a local or travel data plan obviously cheaper - and that is most of the people who come here between November and March.

What to wear

Beachwear on the beach, and covered up off it. Benidorm enforces local ordinances against walking through the town in swimwear, with fines. This surprises people every summer.

Light clothes in summer, and something for the evening - the town dresses up more than its reputation suggests, particularly on the Spanish side.

A jacket for winter evenings. Sixteen degrees in sun is pleasant; the same at nine at night on a sea front is not.

Proper shoes for the Sierra Helada if you are walking the cliff path.

Sun protection, more than you think - over 300 days of sun and a sea breeze that hides it.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

The skyline from the Balcón del Mediterráneo, or better, from the Sierra Helada path at the eastern end, where the whole wall of towers curves away behind Levante beach.

Levante at sunset, from the water's edge, with the towers lit.

The old town's blue-domed church above the headland.

The Cross of Benidorm, a walk up behind the town, for the aerial view.

Guadalest, an hour inland, the village on a rock above a turquoise reservoir.

The Algar waterfalls in the same direction.

Benidorm Island from a boat, the triangular rock a couple of kilometres offshore.

Intempo, the twin-tower with the arc between its peaks, which had a famously troubled construction and now anchors the skyline.

Fun facts

The bikini story is true in outline. In 1959 mayor Pedro Zaragoza rode a Vespa to Madrid to persuade Franco to permit two-piece swimsuits in his town, against the opposition of the local church. He got his way, and it is treated locally as the founding act of the modern resort.

Benidorm was a fishing village of a few thousand people until the 1950s. Almost everything you see is younger than the pensioners wintering in it.

Benidorm Fest, held here each February, is the contest that selects Spain's Eurovision entry - which has given the town a second and rather different cultural identity since 2022.

The town has more hotel beds than several European capitals, packed into an area you can cross on foot in half an hour.

The two beaches face slightly different directions, which is why one is sheltered when the other is breezy.

And the vertical model is now studied by planners, which is a sentence nobody would have predicted about Benidorm thirty years ago.

Big events

Benidorm Fest, in February, Spain's Eurovision selection, which fills the town out of season.

Fiestas Mayores Patronales, in November, honouring the Virgen del Sufragio, with parades and fireworks - the town's own festival rather than a visitor one.

Low Festival, in July, an indie music festival.

Moros y Cristianos in the surrounding towns through the spring and summer.

Summer, June to September, is hot, packed and loud. The winter season, November to March, is the quiet, mild, cheap version. May, June and October are the balance.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The love: Benidorm is extremely good at what it does. The beaches are long, clean and Blue Flagged, the town is genuinely walkable, the microclimate delivers sun when the rest of Europe has none, it is cheap, and everything is set up to be easy - hotels, food, entertainment, transport. The Spanish side is a real Spanish resort with tapas bars and families, the old town is pretty, and the mountains and villages inland are half an hour away and barely visited by the people on the beach.

The complaints are consistent and mostly fair. The skyline is divisive, and people who want a whitewashed fishing village should go elsewhere on this coast. The Levante strip is British-bar monoculture, loud, and can be grim at closing time. August is overwhelming. It is not authentic in the sense visitors sometimes mean, though it is entirely authentic as itself. And a certain snobbery about Benidorm is so ingrained that many people who would enjoy it never come.

Come in May, October or midwinter, pick your beach deliberately, walk up to the Cross on the first morning, and go inland to Guadalest for a day.

FAQ: Benidorm connectivity

Is coverage good given how crowded it gets?

Yes, unusually so. Benidorm's extreme density means everything is close to a mast and the network is engineered for a population many times the registered one. Even a packed Levante beach in August is well served. The gaps are inland, in the Sierra Helada and the mountain valleys.

Do I need mobile data, or is wifi enough?

For a week, wifi is genuinely enough - it is universal in hotels, bars and along the promenade, and EU visitors are on their home allowance anyway. For the winter long stay, weeks of daily roaming charges cost far more than a data plan, which is the calculation most long-stayers get wrong.

How do I get here from Alicante airport?

Direct airport buses run to Benidorm in about an hour, and taxis or transfers are faster. The TRAM light rail along the coast is scenic and pleasant but slow with luggage - it is better used as a day trip than as an airport transfer.

Which beach should I stay on?

Levante is the international end - bars, cabaret, English spoken everywhere. Poniente is quieter and much more Spanish. The old town sits on the headland between them. Booking the wrong one for what you want is the single most common mistake people make here.
