Frequently Asked Questions about Spain eSIM

Do I get a phone number with the eSIM?
No. Our eSIMs are data-only, so they do not come with a phone number. You use them for internet access — maps, WhatsApp, email, social media, streaming and any other app. Your existing SIM keeps your own phone number active.
Can I make or receive calls and text messages (SMS)?
Not standard calls or SMS — the eSIM provides mobile data only. You can call and message as much as you like through internet apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger, which run on the eSIM's data. Standard calls and SMS keep working on your usual number through your home operator, as long as you keep that SIM active.
How much data do I need for Spain?
It depends on the plan you choose. Across nearly 3,000 of our customers' finished eSIMs, the typical one used half to two-thirds of its plan, and on the smaller plans (1-5 GB) about one in three used all of it. Maps and messaging use little; video, video calls and sharing your connection use the most. If in doubt, take the next size up. If you do run out, you can buy another eSIM at any time - you will need WiFi to install it.
What network speeds will I get in Spain?
Your Spain eSIM uses a local mobile network: 4G, and 5G where the network offers it. Speed depends on coverage and your location.
Can I use my eSIM for hotspot/tethering?
Yes, but only for Data Plans with a fixed data allowance. Unlimited plans do not support hotspot or tethering.
When should I install my Spain eSIM?
Install your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home - it is safe to do so days in advance for either plan type. Per-GB plans only start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Spain. Unlimited plans run on the travel dates you select at checkout, with the days counting from your chosen start date whether the eSIM is installed or not - so make sure it is on your phone by that date.

Staying connected in Tenerife: the local guide

Mount Teide rising above the clouds and the Tenerife coastline

Emergency numbers

  • 112 - all emergencies (EU-wide)
  • 091 - Policia Nacional
  • 092 - Policia Local

Time zone

WET (UTC+0; UTC+1 in summer) - one hour behind mainland Spain all year

Weather

Eternal spring: coastal 20-28C year-round, sunnier arid south vs greener cloudier north; near-freezing on Teide (snow possible up top) and occasional calima dust haze

Tenerife runs on the same big three networks as mainland Spain - Movistar, Vodafone and Orange - and your eSIM connects through one of them, so along the coasts where almost everyone stays, data is fast and boring in the best way. Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje in the south, Puerto de la Cruz in the north, and the Santa Cruz-La Laguna metro area all have solid 4G with 5G spreading. One quiet win: leave your phone's clock on automatic, because the Canaries sit one hour behind mainland Spain - the eSIM picks up the correct local time the moment it connects.

Where the signal actually drops

Tenerife is an island of extremes, and the extremes are exactly where your phone gives up. The Masca gorge is the famous one: inside the ravine there is little to no signal for long stretches and GPS bounces off the canyon walls, so download your route and book your exit boat before you start walking. The Anaga mountains in the northeast are similar - fine at the main miradores, patchy to dead in the laurel-forest valleys and the ravine hamlets around Taganana. Up in Teide National Park, coverage is decent around the cable car base and the Parador but cuts out along stretches of the high-altitude roads and trails. The pattern is simple: below the ridgelines and away from towns, treat data as a bonus, not a given.

The apps that need data here

  • Titsa runs the island's buses (locals still call them guaguas). You can now tap a contactless bank card or phone on board, or use the ten+ Movil app; the physical ten+ card costs 2 EUR from stations and vending machines, not from the driver.
  • Teide is a two-booking mountain: cable car timed tickets regularly sell out for morning slots in high season, and the final summit trail (Telesforo Bravo) needs a separate permit booked on the Tenerife ON platform up to 56 days ahead - slots go fast, and since January 2026 non-residents pay a fee (around 15 EUR unguided, less with a guide). Rangers do turn away people who arrive with a cable car ticket but no permit.
  • Whale-watching is book-online territory - the boats out of Puerto Colon and Los Cristianos sell timed departures with e-tickets, and the good responsible operators fill up in summer.
  • Taxis over ride-hailing: apps like FreeNow, Cabify and Uber exist here but mostly hail regulated metered taxis, with far thinner coverage than mainland Spain. In practice you will use taxi ranks, the apps as backup, and a rental car for everything beyond the resorts.

Arriving

Most visitors land at Tenerife South (TFS), a short hop from the main resorts; Titsa buses connect it to Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Santa Cruz, and contactless payment works on board. Tenerife North (TFN) serves mainly domestic and inter-island routes. Either way, the arrivals scramble - accommodation directions, rental car emails, the "landed safely" messages - is exactly when you want the eSIM already installed and ready rather than hunting airport Wi-Fi.

How much data do you need in Tenerife?

More than a pure beach trip, less than a city break. Days by the pool barely register, but the moment you self-drive - and most visitors do - Tenerife becomes a maps-and-bookings island: navigation over mountain switchbacks, cable car and boat e-tickets, restaurant lookups in villages, and the inevitable photo uploads from above the clouds. For most travelers 1GB per 2-3 days is comfortable; budget extra if you video-call home or post every sunset. If you care which host network you end up on, the Spain network comparison covers how Movistar, Vodafone and Orange differ - it applies to the Canaries too.

What to wear

Pack for three climates in one day. The south coast is swimwear-and-sandals most of the year; the north runs a few degrees cooler and cloudier, worth a light layer. Then there is altitude: the Teide cable car base sits at about 2,356m and the summit above 3,500m, where it can be windy and near freezing even while the beach below is 25C - bring a windproof jacket, long trousers and real shoes for that day. On calima days (Saharan dust haze), sensitive eyes and lungs appreciate sunglasses and easy indoor plans.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

The signature shot is Teide floating above a sea of clouds - catch it at sunrise or sunset from the miradores along the TF-21 and TF-24 park roads near the Parador, where the cloud layer usually sits below you; the Roques de Garcia give you foreground. The Masca village viewpoint is best in late afternoon when the light rakes across the ravine. In Garachico, shoot the El Caleton lava pools from the promenade with the Atlantic breaking behind. For beaches, La Tejita with the red bulk of Montana Roja behind it beats any resort strand. Note that Teide is a national park: recreational drones are not allowed without a permit.

Fun facts

Spain's highest peak is not on the mainland - it is Teide, at 3,715m, and measured from its base on the ocean floor the volcano rises roughly 7,500m, which by many accounts makes it the third-tallest volcanic structure on Earth. The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera were certified in 2021 as Europe's first Whale Heritage Site, thanks to a resident population of pilot whales that lives there year-round.

Big events

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (February-March, dates shift with the calendar) is commonly ranked second only to Rio, and the city has been twinned with Rio de Janeiro since 1984 - expect weeks of parades, murgas and all-night street parties. In late May or June, La Orotava lays out its famous Corpus Christi carpets of flowers and colored volcanic sand. Through spring and summer, towns across the island hold romerias - traditional pilgrimages with oxcarts, local dress and a lot of free-flowing country wine.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The love is genuine: reliable warmth in January, and a volcano-to-beach range where you can watch sunrise above the clouds and swim the same afternoon, with the north's green villages feeling like a different island from the south. The complaints are genuine too: the southern resort strips are dense, built-up mass tourism, a rental car is close to essential for the good stuff, calima days can smother the views, and residents have been protesting since 2024 under the banner "Canarias tiene un limite" against over-tourism and its pressure on housing. Travel like a guest - spread your money beyond the strips - and the island is easy to love back.

FAQ: Tenerife connectivity

Does my Spain eSIM work in Tenerife and the Canary Islands?

Yes. The Canaries are Spain, served by the same Movistar, Vodafone and Orange networks, so any eSIM that covers Spain covers Tenerife with no extra setup. The only difference you will notice is the clock: the islands run one hour behind Madrid.

Will I have signal hiking Masca or up Teide?

Assume not. The Masca gorge has long dead stretches with unreliable GPS, Anaga's valleys are patchy, and Teide's high trails cut in and out. Download offline maps, screenshot permits and boat tickets, and tell someone your plan - coverage returns at the main viewpoints and roads.

Is hotel and resort Wi-Fi enough to skip mobile data here?

For evenings, sure - but Tenerife is a driving island, and the moment you leave the resort you are navigating mountain roads, rebooking time slots and checking ferry times with no hotspot in sight. A data plan on your own phone is what makes the island beyond the pool actually usable.
