If your eSIM won't install and you see errors like "Unable to Add Cellular Plan", "Invalid QR Code", or an SM-DP+ activation failure, the cause is almost always one of five things: a weak internet connection, a phone that is locked or not eSIM-compatible, no free eSIM slot, a QR code that was already used, or outdated software - and every one of them is fixable in a few minutes. eSIMpass sells data eSIMs for 200+ destinations, and a clean, single-use profile like the one from €3.07 installs in under three minutes once these boxes are ticked. This guide is specifically about the download and installation failing. If your QR code is fine but the camera won't read it, see the scanning fixes below instead.

To be clear about what this article covers: this is the moment where your phone accepts the QR code or manual details, tries to fetch the profile from the carrier server, and then fails. That is different from a QR that won't scan at all, and different again from an eSIM that installed perfectly but shows no data once you arrive. This is the middle failure - the profile download itself.

First, Rule Out a Weak Connection

Installing an eSIM downloads the profile from a remote activation server (the "SM-DP+" server). That download needs a stable internet connection, and a flaky one is the single most common reason installation stalls or throws a vague error.

  1. Connect to a solid Wi-Fi network, not a busy cafe or airport hotspot with a captive login page.
  2. If you have no Wi-Fi, use a working mobile data connection on another line.
  3. Turn Airplane Mode on for five seconds, then off, to reset the radios.
  4. Retry the installation.

Good news worth knowing: installing an eSIM does not consume any of the plan's data. The download runs over your existing Wi-Fi or mobile connection, so you can install at home before you travel without touching your data allowance.

Confirm Your Phone Is eSIM-Compatible and Unlocked

Two separate conditions have to be true, and a failed install often means one of them isn't.

eSIM support: Broadly, that means iPhone XR/XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and Google Pixel 3 and newer. The quick check on any phone is to dial *#06# - if an EID number appears alongside the IMEI, your phone has an eSIM. Full model list on our eSIM compatible devices page.

Carrier unlocked: A phone still tied to a carrier will often refuse to add a third-party eSIM. On iPhone, check Settings > General > About and look for "No SIM restrictions". If it says the phone is locked, contact the carrier you bought it from to unlock it. This is the quiet cause behind a lot of "it just won't add" reports.

Make Sure You Have a Free eSIM Slot

Modern phones can store several eSIM profiles but only hold a limited number, and some older models have a hard cap. If every slot is full, a new install fails or gets rejected.

  • iPhone: Settings > Cellular. Scroll through the list of plans. Old, expired travel eSIMs from past trips sit here doing nothing.
  • Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
  • Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.

Delete an expired profile you no longer need to free a slot, then retry. One important warning: deleting an eSIM is usually permanent. Only remove a profile you are certain is finished (an expired plan from a previous trip), never the fresh one you are trying to install and never your home carrier's eSIM.

Never Reuse a QR Code You Already Installed

This one catches a lot of people. An eSIM profile can normally be installed once. After a successful install, that QR code is spent. If you delete the eSIM and then try to re-scan the same QR, or scan it a second time on another phone, you will get an "Invalid QR Code" or activation error - the profile has already been claimed.

  • If you installed it once and it worked, do not re-scan the same code to "reinstall" it.
  • If you deleted the profile by mistake, you need a fresh profile, not the old QR.
  • The fix is to contact support and ask them to reissue the eSIM, which generates a new QR tied to your order.

If your QR code is genuinely lost rather than already used, our guide on a lost eSIM QR code walks through recovering it from your order email and account.

Update Your Phone's Software

eSIM handling has improved a lot across iOS and Android versions, and an outdated system is a real source of install failures, especially on older iPhones stuck on early iOS releases.

  • iPhone: Settings > General > Software Update. Install the latest iOS, then restart the phone.
  • Android: Settings > System > Software update (path varies by brand). Update, then restart.

A restart after updating clears the modem state and frequently makes a stubborn install succeed on the next try.

Try Entering the SM-DP+ Details Manually

If scanning the QR keeps failing but you are sure the profile hasn't been used, bypass the camera entirely and type the activation details by hand. Your eSIMpass email includes a manual entry option alongside the QR: an SM-DP+ address and an activation code.

iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code > Enter Details Manually. Type the SM-DP+ address and activation code exactly as shown, respecting every character and dollar sign.

Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM > Enter activation code manually (or "Scan QR code from service provider" then the manual option).

Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Download a SIM instead > Need help? > Enter it manually.

Manual entry sidesteps camera focus, screen glare, and blurry codes, which is why it succeeds when scanning won't. If the camera is your actual problem, our dedicated guide on an eSIM QR code that won't scan has more angles to try. Platform Quick Reference: iPhone vs Android

The flow is the same but menus differ. When everything is healthy: iPhone is Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM; Samsung is Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM; Pixel is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Download a SIM. Each offers scan or manual entry.

For device-specific detail, our eSIM for iPhone and eSIM for Android guides cover the labelling and data-line steps that come right after a successful install.

Still Failing? Reissue From Support

If you have worked through all of the above - stable Wi-Fi, a compatible and unlocked phone, a free slot, an unused QR, up-to-date software, and manual entry - and the profile still errors out, the profile itself may have been consumed or damaged during a half-completed install. This is the point to stop retrying, because more attempts on a bad profile won't help.

Contact eSIMpass support with your order number and describe the exact error text. Support can check whether the profile shows as already downloaded on their side and, if needed, reissue a fresh profile with a new QR code. There is no charge to reinstall a plan you already bought, and the new profile installs cleanly.

Order, receive the QR by email instantly, connect to Wi-Fi, scan once, and label the line. That is the whole process when the five conditions above are met - and it is why starting with a clean, correctly issued profile prevents most install errors before they happen. Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Unable to Add Cellular Plan" mean?

It is iPhone's generic failure message when the profile download doesn't complete. In practice it almost always points to a weak internet connection during install, an already-used QR code, no free eSIM slot, or outdated iOS. Work through those four in order and retry - a stable Wi-Fi connection and an update resolve most cases.

Why do I get an "Invalid QR Code" error?

Two usual causes. Either the QR image is blurry or too small for the camera to read - in which case use manual SM-DP+ entry - or the profile has already been installed once and cannot be reused. If it worked before and you are re-scanning it, that is the problem; ask support to reissue a fresh profile.

Does installing an eSIM use up my data allowance?

No. The profile downloads over your existing Wi-Fi or mobile connection, not over the eSIM plan, so installation costs you zero data. That is why you can and should install at home before you travel, then simply switch it on when you arrive.

I deleted my eSIM by accident - can I reinstall the same QR?

Usually not. Most profiles are single-use, so once installed the original QR is spent even after you delete the profile. You need a new profile: contact support with your order number and they will reissue a fresh QR at no charge. Because deletion is generally permanent, only remove profiles you are sure are finished.

My phone won't add the eSIM at all - is it locked?

Quite possibly. A carrier-locked phone often refuses third-party eSIMs. On iPhone, check Settings > General > About for "No SIM restrictions"; if it shows the phone is locked, your original carrier has to unlock it. Also confirm the phone actually supports eSIM by dialling *#06# and looking for an EID number.

Do I need a different install method for Android vs iPhone?

The concept is identical - add an eSIM, then scan or enter the code - but the menu paths differ. iPhone uses Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM; Samsung uses SIM manager; Pixel uses Network & internet > SIMs. All three offer manual entry as a fallback when scanning fails.
