If your eSIM is connected but data is crawling, the fix is almost always about signal, network mode, or a used-up data allowance - not the eSIM itself - and a reliable plan from €3.07 gives you a clean starting point to rule the plan out. eSIMpass sells eSIMs for 200+ destinations; the examples below use a US plan, but the steps are identical wherever you travel. Work through them in order and stop when your speed comes back.

One honest truth first, because most articles skip it: a travel eSIM connects to a major local host network, exactly like a physical SIM would. Your speed is set by that network's towers and how busy they are, not by the fact that your data lives on an eSIM. A physical SIM standing in the same spot on the same network would give you the same speed. So the goal here is not to "fix the eSIM" - it is to get you onto a stronger signal, the right network mode, and an allowance that is not throttled.

These are standard eSIMpass plans, shown here as an example. If you suspect your current plan is the problem, having a fresh, known-good plan on hand makes it easy to test whether the slowdown follows you or stays with the old plan.

Step 1: Check Your Signal and Move

Before changing any setting, look at the signal bars for the eSIM line. Slow data with one or two bars is a coverage problem, not a software problem.

  • Move location. Step outside, away from thick walls, basements, elevators, and dense metro platforms. Get near a window if you are indoors. Even a few metres can lift you from a weak edge-of-cell signal to a usable one.
  • Check the coverage type. If you see "3G" or an "E" (EDGE) icon instead of "LTE"/"4G" or "5G", you are on a slow legacy band. Some rural areas and building interiors only reach these. Moving usually restores 4G/5G.
  • Rule out a busy tower. Stadiums, festivals, airports, and city centres at rush hour can saturate a cell so everyone slows down. This is congestion, covered in Step 7.

If your bars are full and you are still slow, move to the next steps.

Step 2: Toggle Airplane Mode

The fastest reset for a stuck or degraded connection is a quick Airplane mode cycle. It forces your phone to release its current tower and reattach, often to a better one.

  • iPhone: Open Control Centre, tap the aeroplane icon on, wait 10 seconds, tap it off. Or Settings > Aeroplane Mode.
  • Android: Swipe down the quick settings, tap Aeroplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, tap off. Or Settings > Network & internet > Aeroplane mode.

Give it 15-30 seconds after switching off to reconnect. This alone clears a large share of "suddenly slow" cases.

Step 3: Restart the Phone

If a toggle did not help, a full restart clears the modem state and any stuck background processes. Power the phone fully off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. It sounds basic, but a restart resolves speed issues that survive an Airplane mode cycle, because it reinitialises the radio hardware, not just the connection.

Step 4: Set the Preferred Network Type (5G/LTE)

Your phone may be parked on a slower network generation, or stuck hunting for 5G where the signal is too weak to hold. Setting the mode explicitly can help.

  • iPhone: Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > tap your eSIM line > Voice & Data. Choose 5G Auto or LTE. If 5G in the area is weak and flaky, forcing LTE often gives steadier, faster real-world speeds than a fragile 5G lock.
  • Samsung: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode, and pick the option that includes 5G/LTE (for example "5G/LTE/3G/2G auto").
  • Google Pixel / stock Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your eSIM > Preferred network type.

Make sure you are changing this on the eSIM line, not your home line. If your device also lets you pick which line carries data, confirm the eSIM is the active data line: on iPhone that is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data. For device-specific screens, see our eSIM setup for iPhone and eSIM setup for Android guides.

Step 5: Check Whether the Plan Is Throttled or Nearly Out of Data

This is the single most common cause of "it was fast, now it is slow." Many travel data plans are full speed up to the included allowance, then throttled to a very slow speed once you pass a fair-use cap - they do not always cut you off, they just slow you to a trickle.

  • Check your remaining balance with your provider before assuming a fault. eSIMpass plans show your data amount and validity on the product and in your confirmation, and you can learn to read usage in our guide to checking eSIM data usage.
  • Watch for the cap. If speed collapsed after heavy streaming, hotspot use, or a big backup, you have likely hit the allowance. The fix is a top-up or a new plan, not a settings change.
  • Not sure how much you need? Estimate before you buy so you do not run dry mid-trip:

If your balance is healthy and you are still slow, keep going.

Step 6: Verify Your APN Settings

The APN (Access Point Name) tells your phone how to route data through the host network. eSIM profiles normally set this automatically, but a wrong or blank APN produces a connection that shows bars yet moves almost no data.

  • iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap your eSIM line > Cellular Data Network. If this screen is empty or clearly wrong, your provider can give you the correct APN string to enter. Do not invent one.
  • Samsung: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names, select the eSIM's APN.
  • Pixel / stock Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your eSIM > Access Point Names.

In most cases you should not touch the APN unless support tells you to - only correct it if it is blank or you were given a specific value. Our eSIM installation and activation guide walks through where these settings live during setup.

Step 7: Avoid Peak Congestion

Sometimes nothing is wrong with your phone or plan - the tower is simply overloaded. Networks slow for everyone during local peak hours and in crowds.

  • Shift the timing. Large uploads, backups, and video can wait an hour. Speeds in a packed area often recover once the crowd thins.
  • Prefer Wi-Fi for heavy tasks where a trusted network is available, and keep cellular for maps and messaging.
  • Remember it is not the eSIM. Every phone on that tower, physical SIM or eSIM, is slow at the same moment.

Step 8: Reset Network Settings (Last Resort)

If none of the above works, reset the phone's network settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi passwords and network preferences, so use it only when you have run out of other options.

  • iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Your eSIM stays installed, but double-check the data line and roaming toggle afterwards.
  • Android: Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Mobile Network Settings (wording varies by brand).

After the reset, reconnect to Wi-Fi, confirm the eSIM is your data line, and that data roaming is enabled for it. If speed is still poor after a network reset in a full-signal area with data remaining, contact your provider - the profile may need reissuing.

eSIM vs Roaming: Same Network, Different Bill

A frequent worry is that an eSIM is somehow slower than the roaming pack your home carrier sells. It is not. Both ride the same local host networks; the difference is price and control, not speed. See the full breakdown in eSIM vs roaming. And if your symptom is actually "connected but nothing loads at all" rather than slow, follow our dedicated fix for that in eSIM connected but no internet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my eSIM slow because it is an eSIM?

No. An eSIM connects to the same physical towers a regular SIM uses. Speed depends on the local network, your signal strength, and congestion. A physical SIM in the same place on the same network would perform identically.

Why did my eSIM slow down suddenly after being fast?

The most common reason is hitting your data allowance or a fair-use cap, after which many plans throttle you to a very slow speed. The next most common are a busy tower at peak time or your phone dropping from 5G/LTE to a slower band. Check your remaining data first.

Should I use 5G or LTE for the best speed?

Use 5G Auto where 5G is strong. Where 5G is weak or patchy, forcing LTE often gives faster, steadier real-world speeds than a phone constantly struggling to hold a fragile 5G signal. Test both in your location.

Do I need to change my APN to fix slow speeds?

Usually not. eSIM profiles configure the APN automatically. Only change it if the APN field is blank or your provider gives you a specific value to enter. A wrong APN can show full bars but move almost no data.

Will resetting network settings delete my eSIM?

No, the eSIM profile stays installed. A network reset clears saved Wi-Fi networks and network preferences. Afterwards, confirm the eSIM is set as your data line and that data roaming is turned on for it.

My data is still slow after every step. What now?

If you have full signal, remaining data, the correct network mode, and a reset has not helped, contact your provider. In rare cases the profile needs reissuing. A fresh, known-good plan also lets you test whether the slowdown is the plan or the network.
