Tu SIM actual mantiene activo tu propio número.
¿Puedo hacer o recibir llamadas y mensajes SMS?

Staying connected in Burgas: the local guide

Números de emergencia

  • 112 - single European emergency number

Zona horaria

EET (UTC+2), EEST (UTC+3) in summer - Bulgaria keeps daylight saving, an hour ahead of Central Europe

Clima

Black Sea coastal and milder than the Bulgarian interior: warm summers (27-30C with a sea breeze), cool damp winters (2-7C); the swimming season runs roughly June to September

Burgas runs on A1 Bulgaria, Yettel and Vivacom, and your eSIM rides one of them as its host. Coverage along the southern Black Sea coast is solid - dense 4G through Burgas, the resort strip and the old towns, with 5G in the urban areas. Bulgaria has been a quietly strong mobile market for years and the coast is well served.

After the rest of the Balkans, this is the one where your phone just works

If you have been touring this region, you will have met the same problem in every guide: Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania and Bosnia all sit outside the EU, so an EU or UK SIM roams out of zone and bills accordingly.

Bulgaria is different, and it is worth stating plainly: Bulgaria is in the European Union. EU Roam Like at Home applies here in full. An EU SIM works on home terms - your allowance, your minutes, no surcharge, nothing to think about.

For a Balkans itinerary this makes Burgas a genuine reset point. If you have been carefully managing data across five out-of-zone countries, you can stop.

UK visitors should still check their own operator, since post-Brexit terms vary by provider - some reinstated EU roaming charges and some did not.

And as of 2026, the money is simpler too

Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, becoming the twenty-first member of the euro area and ending 146 years of the lev.

The mechanics, since the changeover is recent enough that older guidebooks are wrong:

  • The fixed conversion rate was 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN.
  • Lev and euro circulated together through January 2026; since 1 February 2026 the euro has been the sole legal currency.
  • Dual pricing in both currencies was mandatory from August 2025 and ran until 8 August 2026 - so it has only just ended, and you may still see lev prices on older signage and menus.

Practically: bring euros, pay in euros, and be mildly sceptical of any price list that still quotes lev. If you have leftover lev from a previous trip, the central bank handles exchange rather than shops.

Where the signal gets weird

Burgas is flat, coastal and easy. The gaps are on the edges of a trip.

The Burgas Lakes. The city is ringed by four large lakes - Atanasovsko, Burgasko, Mandrensko and Poda - and they sit on the Via Pontica, one of Europe's major bird migration routes. The hides and boardwalks out among the reeds are lovely, quiet and thinly covered.

Strandzha. South toward the Turkish border the coast gives way to the Strandzha nature park, which is genuinely remote - forest, villages and very few masts. If you drive down to Sinemorets or Ahtopol, download the map.

Nessebar's old town is a UNESCO-listed peninsula of narrow lanes and stone churches; the causeway and the squares are fine, the alleys drop a bar.

Sunny Beach in August is a congestion story rather than a coverage one - the strip packs an enormous number of people into a small area and the networks feel it in the evening.

The apps that need data here

  • Maxim and Yellow Taxi are the local ride-hailing apps; Uber and Bolt are not the default here. Taxis are metered and inexpensive, but check the rate posted on the window - the coast in summer is where Bulgaria's overcharging reputation comes from.
  • Bus timetables. Burgas is the transport hub for the whole southern coast, and the buses to Nessebar, Sozopol and Sunny Beach are frequent and cheap.
  • Maps with the Cyrillic-Latin issue in mind. Bulgarian is Cyrillic and transliteration varies - the town you are looking for may be spelled three ways.
  • A translation app for anywhere off the resort strip. Russian is widely understood by older Bulgarians, English by younger ones.

Arriving

Burgas Airport (BOJ) is about 10 km northeast of the city, and in summer it is one of the busiest charter airports in the region - it is the gateway for the entire southern resort coast. Out of season, flights thin out dramatically.

The city itself is compact and walkable from the bus and train stations, which sit together near the port.

Burgas is the practical base for the coast: Nessebar is 35 km north, Sunny Beach beside it, Sozopol 35 km south, and the wilder beaches beyond that.

How much data do you need in Burgas?

Light. This is a beach-and-day-trips destination with a walkable centre, and if you are on an EU plan you may not need a separate arrangement at all.

For a week, 1GB per 3 days is comfortable. Size up if you are driving down into Strandzha or working from the coast. Plans top up from your dashboard.

What to wear

Beachwear on the beach; the resort strip is entirely casual.

Nessebar and Sozopol's churches expect covered shoulders and knees - both old towns are working religious sites as well as tourist attractions.

Summer is warm rather than punishing, with a sea breeze that makes 29C pleasant. Bring a layer for the evening, because the wind off the Black Sea drops the temperature after dark more than people expect.

Out of season it is a different coast entirely - windy, damp and cool, with much of the resort infrastructure closed. October to April needs a proper jacket.

The photos everyone wants (and how to get yours)

The Burgas Bridge - the wooden pier reaching out into the sea from the Sea Garden - at sunrise. The Black Sea coast faces east, which means Burgas gets sunrises rather than sunsets over water, and this is the frame everyone comes for.

Nessebar's old town from the causeway, with the medieval churches and wooden houses stacked on their peninsula. Early morning, before the day-trippers.

Atanasovsko Lake's salt pans, where the water turns pink and flamingos and pelicans stop on migration.

Sozopol's old town at golden hour - quieter and, many would say, prettier than Nessebar.

The Sea Garden itself, the long park along the shore that is the heart of how Burgas actually lives.

Fun facts

Nessebar is one of the oldest towns in Europe, founded by Thracians and settled by Greeks over 3,000 years ago, and its old town has been UNESCO-listed since 1983.

The Via Pontica migration route passes directly over Burgas, which makes the lakes around the city one of the most important birdwatching sites in Europe - hundreds of thousands of storks, pelicans and raptors pass through each autumn.

Atanasovsko Lake is still a working salt pan, harvested by traditional methods, and its brine and mud are used therapeutically.

And Bulgaria's rose valley inland produces a large share of the world's rose oil - by weight, one of the most valuable agricultural products anywhere.

Big events

Summer is the season, and July and August fill the coast with charter flights from across Europe.

Spirit of Burgas and the city's summer festival calendar bring music to the beach.

The autumn migration, September and October, is the birdwatching peak over the lakes.

Winter on this coast is genuinely quiet - Burgas keeps working as a port city and a regional centre, while the resorts close almost entirely.

Why people love it - and why some don't

The love: Burgas is a pleasant, liveable coastal city with an excellent seafront park, and it is the right base for a southern Black Sea trip - Nessebar and Sozopol within half an hour, wild beaches south, birdwatching lakes on the doorstep. Prices remain low even after the euro changeover. And for anyone doing a Balkans loop, being back inside EU roaming and the eurozone at once is a practical relief.

The complaints are fair. Sunny Beach, 35 km up the road, has a reputation for cheap package excess that colours the whole coast's image, and in August the strip is not for everyone. Burgas itself is short on sights - it is a working city with a lovely park rather than a destination in its own right. Taxi overcharging on the coast is a real and persistent annoyance. And the season is short: outside June to September, much of what people come for is shut.

Base in Burgas rather than the resorts, day-trip to the old towns, and come in June or September.

FAQ: Burgas connectivity

Does EU roaming work in Bulgaria?

Yes. Bulgaria is an EU member, so Roam Like at Home applies in full and an EU SIM works on home terms with no surcharge - unlike Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania and Bosnia, which are all outside the zone. UK visitors should check their own operator, since post-Brexit terms vary.

What currency does Bulgaria use now?

The euro. Bulgaria joined the euro area on 1 January 2026 at a fixed rate of 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN, and the euro has been the sole legal currency since 1 February 2026. Dual pricing in both currencies ran until 8 August 2026, so some older signage may still show lev.

Is there good coverage on the resort strip?

Yes - dense 4G with 5G in the urban areas, on all three Bulgarian networks. The one caveat is congestion rather than coverage: Sunny Beach on an August evening puts a great many phones on very few cells.

Which airport serves the southern Black Sea coast?

Burgas (BOJ), about 10 km from the city. It is very busy with summer charters and much quieter out of season, when Sofia or Varna may be the more practical route.
